ok i already kinda stated this in one thread but i wanted to start another for some more info....ok back about 3 months ago i was getting smoke from my exhaust.....then one day my car wouldn't start! take it into mazda and they tell me my turbo is shot, so if your turbo is shot your car wouldn't be able to start nor run, right?

okay so one day i go into mazda to survey the damage, the car was outside and they brought it into the shop...so me being new at all this turbocharged modification stuff, i really paid no attention to it when they started the car and thought nothing of it....and now im reading all this stuff about the smoking problems and find out that you just needed a different kind of oil???? so im asking what kind of oil was needed for whoever else had this problem? and i also would like to get opinions if you guys think that mazda maybe diagnosed my car improperly as to why my car wasn't starting, then magically mazda got it started when i went to go look at it.

Your car will run with a bad turbo, it just will not boost. The thicker oil that several people are changing over to is 5w/40 (and I've actually heard of some using 0w/40 in warmer climates) However, no, if your car is not starting, this is NOT because of your turbo. Turbocharged cars don't REQUIRE the turbo to operate, start, turn over engine, etc.

So yeah...the dealer bulls*** you on that. On the plus side, you may get a new turbo out of it from the sound of it...lemme know what happens.

yea....kinda thought so, they blamed it on my TBE creating too much backpressure causing the turbo to fail..............................BLAH!

turbo SEALs maybe, thats a common excuse. the turbo itself? no.

yea ive heard the seals were bad as well. So you dont think the turbo itself is runied from what your reading here? also weren't there like 3 versions of the k04 build too? if so does anyone know what they've done to them?

a 0w40 oil would be for colder climates. the ones in warmer climates are using a 10w40. i use 5w40 and it resolved the smoking issue i had after adding a turbo back exhaust.

well im in a cold climate as of now, so if alls i needed was different oil instead of changin out my turbo...........im gonna be PISSED.

ha thats all i did. i've been running 5w40 amsoil euro spec for about 4 months now and its good stuff. going to switch to rotella t syn 5w40 here soon.

they recommend 5w30 here in the US because of CAFE standards and that was the best oil they could get away with using. If you look in the manuals for the euro/aussie ms6 they have several different oil weights they recommend and 5w40 is one of them.
