2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
My Mazdaspeed Protege just went out of warranty last week. So I figure why take it to the dealer for service anymore. It has a little over 20,000 miles on it and I was wondering what would be a good oil to run in it. Synthetic maybe? Any help would be appreciated here. Thanks,
Richard.

I've been using Mobil1 (synthetic) in my car since it had 15K miles on it, and I just went over 100,000 miles. I have a Protege5, but the motor is the same, just no turbo.

What kind of mobil 1? 5w 30, 10w 30?

Your manual has a breakdown of when exactly you should use which grade, but generally you use 10w30 in a warmer climate, and 5w30 when it's cold out.

I'm using 5w30 right now, but it's way below freezing most of time. In the summer I'm going to switch to 10w30 as it gets near 100F.

mobile 1 full synthetic 10w-30 is all my car gets since i got it. hey i think they made the original synthetic so they have to be the best right lol j/k.

just make sure to use a full synthetic when u do decide. it may be expensice but just go to walmart and get a gallon for 20 bucks.

royal purple full synth here.. even while on warranty i said **** it, dealer didn't see the car since i bought it used, i went there to get oil filters and thats about it.. i did my own oil changes.

yeah royal purple here as well.

i read somewhere mobile1 is no longer fully synthetic, but still labeled that way. something about them and castrol. i'll see if i can find it.

ONLY SYNTHETIC AND NOTHING BUT IT!!!!!!!
if you have the pocket book, Royal purple or AMS Oil are the way to go.
however, Valvoline Syn-power is right up there and is what I use, and IMO its better than Mobil 1 because it has better additives, Mobil 1 should be fine though. Just dont use that Quakerstate "Q" crap haha.

^^ I am with 20mazdaspeed03 I use Royal Purple 10W-30 and K&N oil filter..sometimes Mobil 1 oil filter.....

right now im using mobile 1 full synthetic 5w 30 but switching over to 10w 30 royal purple next oil change

I have seen some friction break-down information on Royal Purple oil, and it was not good. You would be better off using regular, non-synthetic oil, than Royal Purple. I have used Mobile One for years, I tore down a few engines that used Mobile One for 100,000+ miles and the bearing surfaces had virtually no wear marks. That was all the proof I needed, but to each his own.
