GI

Simply a box that holds the filter...

That is not a resonator...

It does have a short curved tube (elbow) on the end; if that's what you are referring to. Is that a resonator? I don't know.

The only resonator I know of is in the exhaust. I've never heard of anything on the intake side of the engine...If you remove the resonator from the exhaust, it will make your car louder...Not loud like an aftermarket exhaust, but noticeable for sure. I don't think you will see a performance gain from this though...maybe 1HP??

Not the short elbow (I think that is Mazda's poor excuse for a cold air intake)...

Not an exhaust resonator either...

What I mean is usually, on most stock intakes, there is a little plastic box attached to the intake somehwere, either next to the airbox, or somewhere on the intake pipe itself. It helps to remove the resonator, as it creates some backpressure, but it helps to reduce the intake noise (which most car company's try to dampen or remove all together).

Have you ever opened the hood with the car running. when the fan kicks on it blows hot air directly on that spot. I suspect the elbow is turned that way so it does not suck in so much hot air. with my cone filter on, when the fan kicks on it starts to sputter ever so slightly.

GI- i know what you're talking about an intake resonator, but after removing my air box to change over to my Ractive Cone filter and looking into the piping that leads to the turbo, there doesn't seem to have anything that dampens the sound. Although, i'm pretty sure most, if not, all cars have an intake resonator.

Why are you asking about one? Do you want more intake sound? If so, just add a cone filter and you'll hear everything a bit louder.

Limited,

Thank you! I am thrilled that you know what I am talking about, cuz for a second there I thought I was going nuts. I have removed them on every car I have ever owned and noticed better throttle response and a better sound. I just figured I would remove the one on my car, but I couldn't find it...

GI - this is a MAZDASPEED board. We will try to help anyone to the best of their ability. That's what we're here for, to learn from one another. Glad i could help. If i can't answer your question, someone else here has got to know something...
But like i said, if you want better throttle response and better sound....just add a cone filter!
