I am looking to get a 06 S Grand Touring and really want the nav system. Is there a monthly cost to it? I am not very familiar with Mazda's so I was just wondering if it was like satellite radio where you paid for it monthly. If someone could let me know that would be great. Thanks

nav is always free. not sure about the stock units but i would go after maket. the nav systems Pioneer offer are sweet. So nav is free but if the unit offers XM/Sirius then you can get it if you want to pay those channels which is not done though mazda but XM/Sirius. Again not sure about the stock nav but the systems offered from pioneer also offer a Nav traffic though XM radio, you can read about that on the XM's website. So my opnion is go with a pioneer unit since is it probabaly has better nav/ better maps, more contol features for audio and nav and is also cheaper.

Check with the dealer about updating costs. Nav all works off a disc or hard drive so it is not continously updated. You either have to reload it or replace the discs as newer become available.

i like the factory nav WAY better then the pioneer system. Ive got both in my car currently so ive had a chance to actually use them rather then just guess. I payed $1400 extra when i bought the car and got the factory nav system, my pioneer avic-n1 would have been about $1700, so factory is cheaper too. As far as updates CDs, i dont know how much they are. Ive had mine since i got the car in 04 and ive only noticed neighborhoods not being on there.

so to answer your original question, no you dont pay monthly for NAV. Maybe buy a new cd every few years.

see....

Heres the diff between factory nav and aftermarket.
Factory nav is fully intergrated with your car . No tacked on look to it. The controler is in a convienient spot and cant be lost. The DVDs are updated annually by NavTech and are available for $150. All nav systems will need updated DVds periodically and most use NavTech DVds.
Aftermarket units have to be wired to your car. Something that not everyone is willing to do. A nav unit added after the fact will not be as seemless as a factory unit and will add a higher risk of theft to your ride as its more visable...
You can add factory Sirius Sat radio to your factory unit and it will not affect the factory nav. Also you can play cds and use the nav unit at the same time with factory nav some aftermarket units you have to choose between music cds and nav cd being used...
Overall Im happy with my OEM nav and recommend it to anyone looking into it...
BTW you can add the cost of factory nav to your car payments would be only a couple of bucks diff a month vs the full price upfront for a aftermarket unit...

Thanks ya'll!! I will be prolly go with the nav system. If you have more recommendations on what I should and shouldnt get then please let me know. I have never had a mazda before so would love some advice from current owners. I am getting rid of a honda crv so i can get something sporty. thanks again

yeah tgm3 about sums it up for ya. lol.
one thing thats nice about the pioneer unit that i have is once you put in your destination you can take out the nav cd and play music and stuff. Also my friends gotta pioneer double din dvd/cd/nav and his has 2 seperate cd drives, one for the nav cd and one for music.
