Question about idling...

Please bear with me, I'm not the most turbo knowledgeable person....

If I've been driving my msp, and I go to park, or am at a light or whatever (hehe, I guess that would be when I'm idling  ) the fan kicks on, which it only does for like, 10 to 15 seconds, then shuts off for a few seconds, then kicks on again... It almost seems like it's drawing too much power, the rpms drop a bit (like, 850 to 750... not very much) and if I have the headlights on, they dim for a few seconds..

So, the description sucked, but the questions are...

1) it is the fan kicking on, right? or is it some turbo related thing?

2) is the fan or whatever supposed to turn on and off that often? on all my other cars, it stayed on for longer and didn't come on as often...

3) what could be causing the power draw and the lights dimming?

4) if I take it into the dealer, what should I tell them as far as descriptions of the problems?

Anyways, I'm really not as stupid as I sound... just used to my old del sol. Thanks for any help you can give me! :D

Everything sounds perfectly normal to me. The Fans do that on all proteges, they kick on if it hits a certain temp and once cooled they shut off no biggy. THe light dimming is just the voltage regulator on the alternator seeing a draw on power, which cuase a voltage drop ie dimming and then starts to put out a little more amperage. In doing this the alternaot becomes a harder drain on the car mechanicly and the idle drops from the aditional mechanical load.

Its fine, If you think thats bad you should See my JL 1000/1 amplifier. I can drop my idle to 200 from 1000 with just that amp pumping a sub, ITS COOL!

thats funny, i installed a 1000/1 and a 300/4 in a chevy pick up and it actaully killed the truck sorry this is off topic:p

Well, it seems my problem pales in comparison, lol.

Is there anything you can do to make it stop? It's not too bad, just kinda annoying, especially at night with the dimming and all.

Try rolling up/down all the windows at once at night :) The same dimming will happen. Perfectly normal :(

get a marine battery, that should fix all your dimming problems. oh yeah ground kit would work nicely too. both would be kickass.

put a 1 farad capacitor on every accesory that draws power! :D
Thats about the only way.

Thats why I have the 180 amp AC delco alternator!
