Question about 2021 CX-5 GT with premium package

Hello forum members:
New here and need some sage advice from you all. I was looking for the Mazda CX5 for quite sometime. Finally, booked 2021 deep crystal blue CX5 GT with premium package on Carvana few days back. The car got delivered today. Just drove 10 miles and now it has the amber low oil pressure light on. It comes and goes. Not sure how serious is this. Carvana has a 7 day return policy but I am not able to find service appointment at Mazda dealership within the 7 day period to check the car.

The car has 34800 miles and I got it in $26590 plus around 2K for registration and tax. Final price $28500.

I have 2 questions -
1. Am I getting a decent deal on the car ?
2. How serious the ‘low oil pressure’ warning light could be ?

Keep it or return/exchange it within the 7 day period ?

Appreciate any help/insight you could provide.

Thanks!

This is the light I see. Seems like for low oil level but still serious, right ?

Generally that is caused but low oil but issue might be related to this issue

Thank you. It says for the turbo charged engine. I don’t have a turbo one on my 2021 GT. Still applicable ??

Someone probably offloaded post warranty for cracked cylinder head issue to Carvana

You have an opportunity here that many don’t to save yourself from a huge financial liability by returning this vehicle via that 7 day window

Thanks. The car still has 2 months bumper to bumper warranty and around 25 months of powertrain warranty left.

I just turned it on and I dont see the light. It happened earlier in the day as well. Sometimes it comes and sometimes not🤔

I will keep an eye on this for next couple of day and may use the 7 day return opportunity.

There's more than likely a problem. Hopefully Carvana inspected the car and added oil if it needed it.
First thing I'd do is check the oil level and add if needed.
Second I'd call closest Mazda dealer and see if they can get it in fast for an evaluation.
Third if you cant get it into Mazda soon I'd take it back to Carvana.
If it's the exhaust seals or even a cracked head it's going to be a lot of problems with taking it in, trying to get a loaner, etc. It's not the way I'd want to start with a new car.

Seriously… IMO.. oil pressure related issues in an engine are nothing to be taken lightly. The ability to hand back to Carvana…..Please do. An engine low on oil pressure or run at low oil levels never does it any favors.

How long are you planning to own this vehicle?

I rest my case

Like others have suggested, you really should return the car to Carvana. Don’t bother to get this 2021 CX5 GT inspected by a dealer.

Low oil level warning light, although it isn’t a serious situation (hence it’s amber, not red like Low Oil Pressure Warning Light) that you need to stop the engine right away, but it does indicates the engine is either consuming oil from many reasons, or leaking oil from cracked cylinder head which happens sometimes on the 2.5L NA with cylinder deactivation. You can pop the hood open to check the oil level with the dipstick and see how dirty the oil is. This can tell many stories from the condition of the oil.

This 2021 CX5 GT with 34,800 miles shouldn’t have either of above warning lights on, or it simply means the engine is having problems that you don’t want to deal with even if the car still has some warranty.

Besides I don’t believe $26,590 is a good price for a 3 year old car with 34,800 miles. I paid less than $30K before the TTL back then for my 2016 CX-5 GT AWD with Technology Package, and with only 3.5 miles on the odometer.

Drove around 30 miles today, no ‘low oil level’ light. It just came once yesterday for few minutes. Checked the oil level today. It looks like it is in the max-min range. Please see attached the pictures of the dip stick and the refill oil cap.

The car runs great but the oil level light that came yesterday for few minutes is bothering me. If it comes again within the next 5 days, I am 100% sure I will be returning it. If it does not come up then what you all suggest after the dip stick check ? get it checked with mazda dealer or don't bother and just return it to Carvana ?

Appreciate any info/help you could provide.

Thank you. I checked the price at my local mazda dealers, carvana and car max with the similar configuration and the prices are in the same range everywhere. The current used car market is not buyers market :(. If I go for a new 2024 CX5 premium plus, it would be around 40K OTD. If I return this then I ‘may’ just buy a new one. The mazda dealer near me is having a 0% APR for 36 months on new CX5.

I paid about that same price for my 2021 GT w/GT Premium Package on 12/31/2023 with only 20,107 miles on the odometer. I guess prices can vary by location. In my opinion, to get close to double the miles for essentially the same price with the oil light on to boot. I would return it in a heartbeat.

Thank you for all the information and insights so far. Drove around 40 miles today, no ‘low engine’ oil light. It just came for few minutes yesterday within an hour of getting the car.

Now, I have a theory that I wanted to run by you all. Carvana truck that delivered my car at my home had 2 cars on the trailer. One over the above and both of them a bit tilted. It could be that the oil shifted during the transportation due to the tilt position and the sensor got activated for the low engine oil and it got deactivated when the oil resumed its normal position at flat surface ? I only saw the light for few minutes within an hour of getting the delivery….no light after that.

Does it make sense or am I just going insane thinking about the low oil warning light :)

You've purchased a used car with known engine design defects that cause it to consume and/or leak oil. It's given you the warning light that could be a tip off of that problem.

You got a price that is very good but not unrepeatably great.

You are trying to rationalize away the warning light because you've become emotionally invested in the car (as one does) and returning it is a hassle.

I had an order in with Carmax for a low mile 2021 GT and was very excited... till I dug into the service history and discovered its engine was in the problem range and it'd been in for a low oil light at 5000 miles. I passed. The next week I found a 2022 Turbo Signature with under 6000 miles for $4000 more and bought it.

So happy I waited.

Return the car to Carvana. If you're wrong and it's fine all you've lost is the hassle. If it's a problem and you don't return it you've got ugly service challenges ahead of you.

First, I would do an oil change, 0W-20 says in the manual, go at any oil change shop. See if the oil light goes away. If the light is still there, then you can return the car. Do the oil change yesterday!

Given that OP only has seven days to return the car, I disagree with this advice. If the car is consuming oil it could take a few thousand miles for the light to go on again. Changing the oil and getting the light to turn out for a week says nothing about the health of the valve seals or cylinder heads.

I did not understand from the post that the car is consuming oil, only that is has the oil light on. If I would have this situation, I would first make sure that the car has the recommended oil serviced. It's a used car, you don't know who and what oil they put in.
