Purge Valve?

Got another cel on my way back from Happy's grooming trip to Petco. Took the MS3 to the dealership, and the service adviser told me they replaced the purge valve. Has that happened to anyone else yet? What is a purge valve? -_-a

Keep in mind this is a separate issue from the cel everyone was getting in cold temperatures. I had that taken care of 12 months ago.

The purge valve is part of the evap emissions control. This is a common failure in Mazdas.

I think it might be a voluntary service item. I wasn't throwing a cell when I took mine in for the mount upgrade and they did about a half dozen things, and one was to replace the purge valve.

yeah its a purge selonoid valve it basicaly acts in relation to the gas tank and the pressure inside of it from what i remember there is a vac line from the intake to it and then from the valve back to the tank some stupid emissions control bs... (damn you california!!)

This is my first Mazda (owned Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Chevy, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai and Acura). Anything else I should know?

You lost me at the pressure part. (I'm car stupid) lol~ Thanks for the info though. *^_^*

When the car is off, gasoline vapors from the fuel tank are absorbed in a charcoal cannister. When the engine is running, vacuum from the intake is directed to the cannister through the purge valve to suck the fumes from the charcoal back into your engine. This keeps the fumes out of the atmosphere. The purge valve is a solenoid controlled by the ECU to open when it thinks the engine can take the extra air. There is a little pump that sucks on the system to check for leaks and it sets a CEL if there is one.

Common on lots of GM products also. 9 times out of 10 when i worked at a chevy dealership the code would be either a large evap leak (fuel cap) or a small evap leak (purge solenoid). It is cool to hook up the smoke machine and close the system to find the leak tho.

But everyone knows the a chevy will have something wrong at any given time, so no need to repeat it. lol
