Protege vs. Mx-3

I came to these forums b.c no one over at mx-3.com seems to know much about the similarities between these two cars. To put it bluntly, I need a sunroof badly. But I really want a moonroof. So there was some speculation going around the mx-3 people that certain parts on the Protege will work on an Mx-3. I'm just curious as to whether or not anyone here has tried anything like this. Albiet, sunroof or moonroof. I tried to get the dimensions of my top cover to compare to other cars, but clearly it doesnt make any real difference as I'll have to replace the whole sunroof frame. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions thanks. -Cosmas.

I am with you, I don't even think the 2 cars share the same platform.

well...your wrong.

Mazda Protege 90-94
Mazda 323 90-94
Ford escort 91-96
Mercury tracer 91-96
Mazda MX3 92-95 are all the same chasis (BG)

You can interchange anything in the engine bay, interior, and with alot of work, the body panels can be made to fit on with any combination.

the 1.8 litre DOHC (BP05) can be found in the escort GT's/LX-e's, Protege lx's and mercury tracer LTS

The 1.8 SOHC is in the protege DX/SE

The 1.6 SOHC is in the MX3/323

And the non-gt escort come with a Ford derived 1.9l SOHC

all suspension can be interchanged wchich is why alot of 1st gen guys get Escort ZX2 struts and MX3 lowering springs.

oh yeah you can find the DOHC 1.8 in the miata/95-98 proteges, some years of the kia sephia

so yes, as i said before, your statement was incorrect (loser) lol j/k

Well, this probably doesn't matter anyway since the thread-starter hasn't been back to the forum. Yes, the Mx-3 and the first gen pro are built on the BG platform, (my bad...) but you went on and stated a bunch of crap afterward. I'd love to see how you can fit a first gen door onto a MX-3 as you said the body panels can be fitted, bondo king. Ditto for the interior. The MX-3 was only available with a 1.6 4-cyl or 1.8 V6. The 1.9L is purely a Ford product as I had that in my Escort Wagon in the past. The 1.8L V6 was only fitted to the MX-3 and none of the other cars you mentioned.

So yes, part of your statement was incorrect (loser) lol j/k

All or most drivetrain and chassis components are interchangable. Even the dashboard can be swapped between the Protege and MX-3. Plenty of MX-3 guys put the 1.8 DOHC BP-ZE in their cars, and plenty of guys put the 1.8 DOHC K8 or 2.5 KL-ZE in their Proteges.

Brakes, suspension, etc, are all interchangable.
