Protege Garage Intake Mani & NSN IM spacer review

Alright so I triple checked every vacuum line and plug and started her up and there is no CEL so that is good! I let her warm up and I drove around the block and everything seemed good so I gave it a little more gas to hit boost. Immediate hesitation and the boost was not going up very high at all! Then the car shut off. I was able to start her back up and I drove to a parking lot but it kept trying to shut off because it wouldn't idle. I'm guessing I have a big vacuum leak. Do you guys think the new intake has a bad seal? Can't I spray something to check whether there's a leak or not? I do have the UNICHIP and I know it's supposed to have some problems with that, but nothing this extreme.

The hot pipe was not on all the way on the turbo so that fixed it. This thing is awesome and pulls all the way to redline! The boost dropped 2-3 lbs though so I need to increase it. Is that normal? It is also idling pretty low. Anybody else have this problem?

+1. Where? Im thinking about doing this over the summer too if ken still has some in stock.

I think it was a GB a while back. I got mine from a friend. I would contact NSNMOTORSPORTS.COM and see if they still make them. I couldn't find it on their site.

Here's an update. The car has been idling really low and almost stalls so I decided to check for a boost leak. I made a leak tester very similar to the one here. It revealed a leak off the manifold by the passenger side which is unfortunate. I'm going to loosen all the bolts and retorque them. Is this the proper torque pattern?

Well crap. I loosened all the bolts and retorqued correctly at 15lbs and used my leak tester but it shows a leak at the same spot! I'm going to put another gasket where the spacer and intake manifold meet. Do you guys think this will solve the problem? What is my next step if it doesn't?

the spacers are not perfect. there can be and most likely are imperfections on the surface. my spacer had noticeable imperfections around some of the runner holes. not a big deal... i cleaned each side up as best as possible to ensure they were as smooth and flush as possible, then i added the gasket.

Alright, but what did you do to clean the spacers? Sandpaper?

just used a straight edge to knock any burs loose. i also LIGHTLY ran a file across the surface to even it out. i would not use sandpaper.

most likely, the additional gasket will fix your problem.

I agree, use a straight edge to make sure the circumference is flat on both sides of the spacer, this is the most important thing to make sure it seals. If not then use a really fine file to make sure it's flat. Better to file it a bit then to risk a vacuum leak. And of course you need 2 gaskets anyway to run a spacer, one on each side.

I put the new gasket on and I don't have the nasty knocking I had before. I hooked up the leak tester and I could still hear a very faint hissing. I sprayed some choke cleaner all around and the idle didn't rise. I'm wondering if the JoeP Fuel Pressure Regulator is pushing some air out of it when I pump air into the system. Any thoughts?

I know this is an old thread but i just installed the ported manifold to my msp and my problem is it starts, revs up to 3k and makes a whining noise, then it dies.i have tried everything i could do and im out of ideas

you have a vacuum leak somewhere, sounds pretty massive as well. Check your intercooler pipe, throttle body connections, vacuum line for the brake booster, ect

Alright ill try tomorrow. I also hooked up a vacuum block from the booster to see if that wouldwork but idid the same thing

fyi without EGR the car does not idle well at all in cold temps on first start up. I remember having to use my foot as a IAC to keep it from stalling whenever it got really cold out.
