Protege engine in 626

I bought an engine from JDM that was listed for a 626 and turns out it’s a protege engine. I got it installed in my 1998 626 and it’s misfiring and my mechanic had no idea what to do because he didn’t know what car the engine came out of and after doing research I just now found out it’s a protege engine. He said it was giving a p0340 code. Do I need to get a camshaft sensor for a Mazda protege and put it on there? I’m lost

What year car was the engine pulled from. This may help.
ECU change may be inevitable or just changing the sensor for a new OEM unit may do the trick.

Doing some quick research the camshaft sensor is the same for the 2.0 liter Protege and your 626 2.0 engine so it's not the sensor.

Check your wiring and installation to be sure it's all good.
Good luck. 🤞

I’m not sure the year it came from I got it from JDM of Houston and they said they didn’t know what car it came from I was only able to figure out it’s from a protege after google searching an image of my engine, but I’m guessing it’s from a 2001 protege.
