Protege 5 cut out on road

ive had my 03 ss p5 for about 12,000 miles...no such problems like this at all...

This is what you monkeys get for buying automatics. I laugh at you.
Automatics are always gonna be (second)

I have a 2002. It's @ about 5k miles. I use the tip-tronic in auto and manual (depending on mood or who's driving).
You have an 02.5 or later. The '02's came with the regular automatic.

the mazda dealer in our area sucks. i'll never go back there again. they blamed us 4 driving 2 rough letting the engine get loose when in actuallity, they 4got 2 screw the damn thing back in 2 begin w/ when we had it repaired. they also don't know the diff in left and right side windshield wippers. they kept giving us the driver side wipper which is longer than the passenger side. they simply had no clue. basically, we have 3 paris of driver side wippers (6 right sides). and yes, i know i have a 2002.5 feel it's rediculous 2 put that on. i'm trading in 4 a 5-speed. auto is pissing me off; thought the tip-tronic would b a lil bit of help w/o having 2 hit the clutch in heavy traffic everyday and dealing w/ our monsterous hills (people seem 2 not care u have a 5-speed being they creep up less than an inch from your rear bumper on a damn hill, always happens here). go figure. at least can depend on the sedan 4 now that they finally fixed the damn prob on the car. The 5-speed sedan gave more probs than the tip-tronic btw.

I have had my car just over a year this month, with 16k miles on it and it has been to the dealer FOUR TIMES for the same problem and going back in for the FIFTH TIME tomorrow. The first time I went in one of my "coil packs was misfiring" and the spark plug was absolutely destroyed! They immediately then proceeded to accuse me of having messed with my sparks plug. Upon telling them I had never so much as even looked at my engine since I bought the car they proceeded to tell me someone must have taken them out and dropped one or something! What a bunch of SAPS! So I leave there and I go get my Intake put on a week or so after and I get my exhaust done and drive around for 1000 miles or so and all the sudden I notice sever sputtering and heavy RPM drops even while I am driving. I would be at 3500 rpm going maybe 50-60 mph and the RPMs would drop down to like 2000 or so. I could be in a pedal to the floor accel and the RPMs would go where they wanted. So it throws another CE light and I take it back for round two.

Same thing, spark plug blown to hell. Again accuse me of having messed with my spark plugs. SAME COIL PACK EVEN! So again I have to battle them saying that I have never taken my spark plugs out and again never messed with any of that and as I did my intake myself, I know they didnt get messed with then. So driving around again and this time completely stalls on me at a stop light in the middle of the busiest intersection you can pretty much be in.

Go to the dealership, dont even give me an explanation this time. They just take it in back and come back out with it. Havent even left the dealership and it does it again. Send it back in. This time they tell me it is for sure fixed. I asked what was wrong, they couldnt tell me. How are you supposed to have fixed something if you cant tell the owner what was causing the problem.

So 4th time I had just driven down to Florida, nice little 340 mile drive from Georgia and I hadnt even turned off my car once the entire drive down there and I am pulling off the highway and sitting at a stop light at the off ramp and CLUNK! I hear a little bit of a pinging noise and then it stalls out. Starts up with no problem and limping my car over to the local dealership down there they again proceed to ask if anyone has messed with my spark plugs. This time they showed me the spark plug. COIL PACK 2 AGAIN! The plug has been completely destroyed like someone covered it in gasoline and just torched it. So they "fixed" the problem and I went my merry way and came home a week later, everything going fine. Then about a week ago the heavy sputtering came back and then it stalled again this morning.

The problem I keep coming across is

1) I always warm my car to temp before driving it.
2) I have not ever driven in Sport Mode for more than a mile, it just doesnt work in the city.
3) The dealership has not once been able to fix it.
4) Never once have they been able to tell me why it is happening! EVEN WITH CHECK ENGINE CODES!

LEMON LAW HERE I COME THIS IS BULL $HIT! Mazda is taking a hit on this one.

Same thing's happening to me and a couple other guys who have 2003's w/sport shifters. The earlier autos (non-sport shifter) from what I've seen have not had this problem. My Mazda dealer has no clue about this. A couple friends who are good w/engines think it's either a bad EGR valve or vacuum leak. But no one's sure. It's scary as hell, isn't it?

my auto does it when I"m at a red light with the brake on, I have to put it in park at a red light so then it won't do that.

happened twice when i was stock. first 5k miles if it happened once, its okay. if it happens multiple times, you're ****** because i've never heard of it being fixed

i think its bulls*** that the dealer doesnt even know what it is. they have obviously come across it more than once

My g/f has the same issue with her protege es If its happening in the P5's its probably a tranny thing it seems like its only the sport mode trannies having the issue!! hmmmmm research time........

Power cut out in a manual 5-spd

I'm sure my now-solved problem doesn't have anything to do with the problems you AT/SportShifter people are having, but my story also involves my manual tranmission P5 cutting out on me.

Anyway, I remember the second time it happened really well because my significant other at the time and I were headed from Austin, TX, to San Antonio (90 minutes away) to watch the opening night of Matrix Revolutions on the IMAX. I has barely gotten out of Austin when power seemed to cut out like when you turn the key...only thing was I was doing 65mph in the left lane. Luckily there wasn't anyone directly behind me because power (including engine and lights) shut off for a good full second. This had actually happened before, but it had happened so quick that I almost believed that it didn't happen... like I had blinked or something.

Sadly,we made the decision to scrap our plans and call Mazda Roadside Assistance and have it towed to the dealership (that was about 2 miles away). Unfortunately the tow truck wouldn't get there until 45 minutes later, and in my mind, I still felt like we could make the movie. So I decided to start up the car, and take the feeder all the way to the dealership at 40 mph. When we got there, the dealership was already closed, but the lights were still on. Turns out some guys were still there finalizing a sale to some couple. I went in and told them what happened, that I needed to go to San Antonio. They said that they'd take care of it, and hooked me up with a free rental (turned out to be a brand spanking new Protege EX with less than 30 miles on it). Some major props to those sales guys that night ... they really showed me some excellent customer service.(yippy)

And guess what? We ended up making it to the movie with 10 minutes to spare.

So it turns out that there was something messed up with the alternator. The car wasn't even a year old at the time, so I found this strange. In the service report, it said that they ran tests, determined that the alternator was bad, and that they replaced it with a RX-8 alternator.(cool)

Anyways, just thought I'd share my experience with the engine/power cutting off.
