Protege 1991 VIN code

im looking for a winter car so i can store the rx7 and found this 1991 protege (and a 1992) for under 1k. from the pictures they look ok. i have the vin for 1 of them, the guy doesn't know if it's an LX or a DX and i cant find anything to decode the vin

i don't know too much about 1st gens but i know both are 1.8 but one has ~20 more hp (assuming it's the bp engine?). i'd buy the one with the bp over the other one (if both arent DXs) so if anyone can help me find out which model they are that would be great

i think if it has a 4 lug its a dx

bj222 = 1.8L

bj22(?) = 2.0L

basically, if the 3rd # isn't a "2", it's a 2.0L

i just don't know how to figure out which engine it has from that vin. i'll call back the guy and ask him if it's a 4 or 5 lug. so you're saying the LX back then had a 5 lug wheel?

from what i've looked at, the model code will be the same...the only difference in the vin will be for the engine. if you can, post the vin and i'll see what i can find.

hmmmm so engine code is "23" since BG2 is just the chassis ?

gota find what that 23 means hehe

i found another one with BG223 and its an LX
the guy is not answering his phone hehe. thanks again, i'll probably just go see it and find out for myself
