Project QUIET

where did you get the foam at, and does it stink when it gets warm???

edit: and i want my soul back ;)

Dynamat is indeed a rip off. That's why I used eDead and it tightens up everything. Especially the doors. If you look at my photos at the begining of my post you'll see that the car has a good amount of this type of product lining the floor from the factory.

Also, plain foam will suck up moisture and create mold over time. That is why I used automotive grade carpet padding.

Where did you get the automotive grade carpet padding?

The acoustic foam REEKS for about two weeks after you pull it out of the box it shipped in. Once the smell is gone though, it's gone for good. You might still smell it for a while whenever you pop the trunk though. I got it from partsexpress.com. I got 3 sheets of it, which was more than enough for the trunk. And foam absorbing moisture? Perhaps if there's a broken interior seal or something, or you live in a truly cold area.(as in snow) Here in Cali(SJ), the coldest it gets here is around 40F.

San Jose? You should come out to a meet sometime. Show off that acoustic foam :D

Just curious...all that asphalt stuff you pulled out...what did it weigh in total?

Pulled out? I added everything to what was already stock.

I think he was talking about the gooey black stuff that's under the plastic in the doors..

i believe that stuff is called dumdum or something like that

Can i get a lil more detailed instructions? Id like to do this in the back area for my new set up and in the front door panels... but i want to do it right.

Yes I should. lol But not before I get a better amp! :D And I actually have to place more foam in my trunk, seeing as I finally placed my sub where it's supposed to be. It sounds fine(despite being under-amped), but I figure I might as well finish it. Hopefully I can decide what amp to get sometime this century.

word. any details or maybe even a how-to would really kick some ass. I'd love to try this project over a weekend in the summer. The noise from the wheel wells is slowly starting to get to me.

Yes, any type of "foam" material will hold in moisture at some point no matter where your geographical location is.

As for a how-to, it's really quite simple. You remove every panel, seat, etc. from inside the car. Then, depending on the amount of asphault based deadening material you have, start laying it down wherever you find the most vibration in your panels. You can use my photos as a guide. The carpet padding you can find at your local carpet store. When you pull back the interior carpet you will see it is covered with this material (Note the first pic in my gallery). Tear a small piece off and bring it into the store if need be. I cut this carpet into shapes and used 3M #90 High Strength Adhesive Spray (find at local hardware store).

Check these boards as others have more details in how they did it as well.

I already hate eD for other reasons so I might be off here, but I've heard that eDead was a rip-off too. Did you try Dynamat and eDead on the same location to see the difference first, or did you just jump straight to eDead?

Yes, I've used Extreme Dynamat in the past and the eDead product seems to be exactly the same. I'm not a chemist, nor am I an accoustical engineer, so therefore I can only say from my own opinion of using both products in multiple vehicles that they work the same. Side note: I've been installing car audio and home audio systems for over 15 years.

dynamat extreme = butyl based mat (better for adheasion and lower odor)
edead = asphault based (less adheasion and depending on the batch, possible odor)

rammat bxt rules for both adheasion and price.

i used Damplifier from Second Skin Audio, good stuff got a 40% discount off + free shipping since i was a memeber of some audio forum at the time, ill find out what it was later. but i got like 100sq ft for like $160(i think, its been a yr) should look into that, its not asphault based either.

second skin is not butyl based, that much i do know. dynamat extreme and the BXT are the only 2 made of butyl that are on the market. plus the guy that runs second skin is a complete asshole. after a fellow competitor died, he made jokes about it(321fu)
