problem driving in morning

In the morning when i start out in first gear, the car shakes really bad. This is my first stick car and i dunno if its the clutch or somethin or if its just kinda cold. It also kinda does this for 2nd and 3rd too. anyone know whats wrong?

this happens to my gf before...it only happens when she doesnt give it enough gas...dont know if thats really the problem, but when she gives it enough, doesnt happen. also only happens when its cold.

My Protege5 does this, too. I tried starting a thread about this earlier and nobody seemed to have this. Mostly on the right side, right? Damn, we need to figure this on out. And the more gas I give it, the worse it gets, not better. This is my 5th car with a manual, and never have seen this before. It's not right, but I don't feel at all comfortable with the dumbasses at the dealership trying to figure this one out.

i think its the clutch....what i meant by giving it more gas is...before letting the clutch out, she gives it more gas and theres no shaking...when she doesnt give it enough gas, it shakes....its not like its about to stall either........its more like hitting lots of little bumps

i also have a protege5 and have the same problem. I am actually going to the dealership to talk to them about it this week and at the same time get my first oil change (8000 km). ALthough i do have a solution. I find that if i let the car warm up alittle for about 5 minutes then it doesnt do that but if i just take off after i start the car then i will be shaking like a champ. hope this works for you guys :)

I actually work at a mazda dealership and have a 2.0ES and haven't experinced that. What it sounds like is the clutch..sometimes when the clutch isn't algined properly it will give a sensation like the vehicles about to stall or the fronts being kind of shaken from side to side. If that sounds about right lemme know.

Yeah, I have this on mine as well. Since it has been at the body shop (because some dumba$$ hit me) I was going to wait until there is some word on the bushing fix for the back and have all of this done at once. It seems like it takes about 5 minutes for it to stop doing it although a couple times it has happened after 20 minutes of driving. It feels like the clutch is grabbing and slipping repeatedly and the front of the car violently shakes. The more gas you give it with the same clutch pressure, the worse it gets, it doesn't smooth out until you disengage the clutch completely.

is it more like a chatter then shaking.
chatter comes from the drive train.
shaking comes from the motor

Couldn't it just be that the clutch plate needs to warm up a bit before it grabs like it should, similar to brakes?

Sounds like the clutch itself might be made from not-so-great materials. I've owned many manual cars (not now, though, my p5 is an auto  ) including a Miata and never had this problem.

Bring that mother back to the dealer, and bust some balls until they solve it. Keep good records - if your car goes to the shop too much, you might be able to use the lemon law to your advantage. This doesn't soud very serious, but it doesn't sound right either.

yeah the chatter is about right for the clutch slipping because of alignment. as far as the clutch "warming up" it really shouldn't be necassary.

wow, i almost thought i was the only person with this problem! but now i'm more worried than i was before. that's IT, i'm taking my ride into the shop. i hope they don't tell me s*** because of my intake and exhaust stuff. they best not....i will not be a happy camper wakin' up that early. it's like, if i start the car, and then just jet, it'll shake really ******' hardcore. it's horrible. but when i redid the exhaust and put on the intake, it went away...until like a few days back.

I notice that it goes away half way to skool, so my first guess was that it just needed to be warmed up. But I do notice that it does this for 2nd and a lil less for 3rd gear too. Should i bring this to the dealer?

paying more attention now after reading this thread, I realize the same thing happens to me, but usually only from the time I start up to the time I get down the street. My 240 did the same thing, so I figured it was normal.

Yup I have the same thing happen to my car also. Feels like the clutch chattering or slipping a bit. Only when it is cold tho. For 20ESGUY I live right outside of D.C.

Well guys, seems like its a problem with mazda in general. Just go to Miata.net and do a search for clutch shudder from 2000 or 2001 and on cars, they have infinite posts about this, and seems like is the same thing we are having. You may want to check there because i think mazda was working on a recall.

Yup, i have the SAME problem...but once she's warmed up it goes away magically. Anyone here with an aftermarket clutch???

I think everyone is overlooking the obvious. What happens to a balloon in the cold? It shrinks. The same goes for our tires. This is why it goes away after a while. If possible try parking inside, then let me know.

I live in a condo and i pakr in the undeground parking. It does the same thing. But it is due to cold i know that cause when i let my car heat up for a bit the problem goes away. I haven't had my car in the summer yet so i cant say exactly but it is most likely due to the cold atleast from my findings.
