Let's compare Apples to Apples here. I'm gonna buy this car next week and i'm having a hell of a time trying to figure out what is a good deal or not.. In Toronto, Canada at Morningside Mazda.. This is what i'm gonna buy:

$17,695.00 2004 Mazda3 GS
$ 105.00 Metallic paint
$ 795.00 Power Package
$ 1,395.00 Sports Package
$ 1,000.00 4 Spd Sport Mode AT
$ 1,000.00 Air Conditioning
$ 0.00 discount
----------------------------------
$21,990.00 before taxes, extras... , trade in's etc...

This is the MSRP as posted on mazda.ca as of March 12 2004

Now my question is:
1. what is reasonable reduction in price on that? I am thinking of asking him to throw in: Cargo Net $40.25 MP3 Player $565.25 Floor Mats $107.75
for free.

2. what did you buy your car for recently?
(please provide specs in similar fashion, so we can all compare apples to apples! )

thanks,
admdvs

Some dealerships don't even go as low as MSRP. But there are always others that will (if it means a sale).
I'd say you might be able to pull off #1. If I was a salesman, and you were buying all that other stuff (power and sports package)... if you haggle me enough, I'd probably be able to throw in all 3 for free.

just get the gfx package
It's not worth the $1,500 for me. I would rather have the smaller engine and smaller tires to be perfectly honest.

7,695.00 2004 Mazda3 GS
$ 105.00 Metallic paint
$ 795.00 Power Package
$ 1,395.00 Sports Package
$ 1,000.00 4 Spd Sport Mode AT
$ 1,000.00 Air Conditioning
$ 0.00 discount
----------------------------------
$21,990.00 before taxes, extras... , trade in's etc...

OR

$21,450.00 2004 Mazda3 GT (Cloth)
1,095.00 GFX Package
1,000.00 4 Spd Sport Mode AT
$ 0.00 discount
--------------------------------
$23,545.00 before taxes, extras... , trade in's etc...

$1,500.00 difference for: bigger tires, faster engine, fog lights

For a Mazda 3 sport Gt, Titanium Grey, with Air, moonroof, 5 speed and cloth interior I paid $26650 all taxes and levies in "on the road" from a broker. I had 2 dealers on the mainland at $26700 to $26750 which is about 1 k under msrp. If you have your own financing I would suggest going to a broker or just deal with the sales managers. The sales people I dealt with were useless and knew so little about the cars it was amazing.

chantiman, you have to pay the tax on the spot, right? Or can you finance the tax portion as well?
I don't know, I still have to get delivery of the car (2 to 4 weeks!) the broker essentially arranges a sale through a dealer. I assumed that the discounted price is due to the purchase being a cash sale from the dealer's point of view. so I will have the full amount with me. If you can take advantage of the Graduate program there's another $600 you can get back. I had several salespeople tell me that the pricing "was an error" or "was impossible" the next day they would counter with an offer close to or under the price I asked. The broker I dealt with beat the lowest price I could negotiate (I had another broker tell me it was a good deal if that's worth anything)

$925 freight and PDI
$100 air tax

$23,015 before taxes, extras, etc......

The reason most people on this board think their getting ripped off is because most of you have no idea what the actual list price is.

Dealer cost on that car is about $22,100, so sorry your wires are crossed somewhere you won't buy that car anywhere near $21,000.

I took delivery of my Mazda 3 about 1 week ago off the dealer's lot. The car is fully loaded except the leather interior. The salesperson gave me $971 off the listed price plus a $600 rebate from Mazda for university grad.. Total price paide Cdn$27,600 including all taxes.

That quote is believable, although I can't understand why Mazda or one of its dealers would sell to a broker at the rate these cars are selling.

You said in your above post you were paying $21,000 for a GT GFX, your actually paying $22,311 for a GS w/pwr and sport pkg. Sounds like a good deal. A dealer would be stupid to discount one of these $900 dollars at this point.

My only concern would be what kind of service you get at the dealer when they find out you bought the car from a broker? To me $900 doesn't change my life enough to get crappy service on my new car. But the price sounds good.

I hate to break the news to you, but at that price you didn't get a $971 discount you paid list.

$27,600 -15% tax= $24000

That car lists at $24,600. Minus the $600 grad rebate gives you $24,000, so you paid list. Not a big deal the Mazda 3 is the best car on the market and their not supposed to discount them anyway.

What do you need to do to qualify for the GRAD rebate? I'm a 31 year old that dropped out of University 8 years ago. I can easilly produce a degree certificate from the College of Epson or College of Cannon....?

Got my GT GFX MT for 26 700 All in

Not the greatest price, but I had no choice to buy a car my Pro having been stolen.

Furthermore GT GFX are freeking scarse around here.

Essentially the break down is as follow

GT GFX Titanium MT $23 100 (includes all the other cost Freight PDI etc...)
Air Tax 100$
Tire recycling tax 12$

Total 23212$
GST (7%) 1624.84$
PST (7.5%) 1862.76$

Total 26 699.60$

I did get $971 off the list,the $600 grad rebate is after-tax. The $27,600 is including dealer prep, air taxes, destination charges, license, etc.
