preventing door dings?

At stores I always park as far away as possible to avoid dings. But be careful if its down hill in the parking lot. Yesterday I parked at a store, I did notice it was downhill, but looked around for carts and did not see any. So I went in anyway. When I came back I was sitting in the drivers seat on my phone for a few minutes with my window down. I heard a cart start rolling. Looked out and it was headed right for me. Jumped out and stopped it inches from my car. By that time it picked up some good speed.

There is a clear plastic paint protector you can get, it wont prevent dings, but it will protect from chips and scratches in the paint. Dealerships offer the stuff for just the front of vehicles, but you may be able to find a vinyl wrap place that can supply it and will even cover your entire vehicle in the stuff. It goes on the exact same as a vinyl wrap

Unfortunately the paint protection film would be of limited use for the kinds of normal door dings IMO. Works great for rock chips on the front though and wouldn't have a car without it now.

A friend of mine bought his first new car. Parked it way back by it self in the parking lot. This worked for two months and then the same spot way back there provided plenty of room for another car to get up to speed before running into the side of his car at about 20 MPH. He had it fixed and started taking the closest spot he could find.

It's fortunate he's tall enough the mirrors clear! Two weeks ago I had a mirror rub in a downtown tower garage - a haven for door dings if there ever was one. I was next to a truck, but it had one of those wider mirrors and the bottom kissed the edge of mine. Left a scuff, but no permanent harm done. A little meguires scratch remover polished it off. The mirror paint actually seems pretty resilient.

I had an idiot do this to me a few weeks ago. I didn't think of it at the time, but if it happens again I'm taking pics and videos from all angles including the jerk's license plate.

I went 200,000 miles on my Tundra without a door ding. I look for what I call "door ding free spots". I have nearly 53,000 miles on my CX5 and have one door ding. It happened at a time when I stopped at Advance auto parts up front and ran in for just a couple minutes and a guy parked next to me and dinged my Mazda. I have since then made my own door ding protectors out of one by one aluminum stock, neodymium magnets, and black felt. They work awesome and they were cheap to make.

What doesn't make sense for that prick truck owner is that someone pissed off would damage his truck. Either he doesn't care for his fairly new truck or its a company truck.
