I was driving in the rain, when i ran right through an 8 inch deep puddle. no i didn't mean to, i had no idea it was there. and i slammed on the clutch right before i went in. it was also about 30 feet long also. i pulled off to the side of the road and let my car sit for 30 minutes, then turned around on the other side of the road (not flooded). as i drove home it seemed fine, but as i went faster in 5th i was at 3500 rpm and my car started jerking.

-key piece of info= i have a cold air intake (with a hydro shield) but it must have sucked up a lot of water.

i haven't driven it since yesterday either in hope that water will slowly drain out my engine bay

does anyone know what they think went wrong? or how i could fix this myself?

thanks for taking the time to read this

water isnt going to just drain out of an engine. Its a sealed machine. If you hydrolocked your engine it would be running like this right now. Pull your plugs and see if you can see anything (water for instance)

its probably fine.

yeah i know the water inside wont come out by sitting. but if i start my car it will suck up the water sitting on the bottom. there was a bit left last night. so it should be gone now. i just dont want to run the car and have it get worse if the engine is ******....

the intake has to be submerged for it to suck up any significant amount of water.

best way to find out is to start pulling things off.

if you sucked up water, the water would be in the combustion chamber of one or more cylinders, and when you tried to start it up again, if it did start, you'd have one or more dead cylinders trying to compress water and you would bend a rod or lift the head.

if you drove it after this happened...and it ran, you might have something else wet, but the internals are probably fine. the jerking could be something wet, but i think internally you are fine.

check the oil, make sure it looks normal and not milky. check the engine bay and see if you see water sitting in crevices. that will tell you if there is appreciative water that could be chilling somewhere it shouldn't.

all you can do is try to start it at this point and let it idle. let the engine bay heat up...

you don't have water in the combustion chamber anyway, but you especially wouldn't now, since it sat. the water would seep down the cylinders into the oil pan. but again, dude, it would not have run well at all if you sucked up enough water to really do any damage. a car with dead cylinders will vibrate badly, issue check engine lights, and sound like...a WRX.

see how it goes...if it idles fine, and you have no check engine lights, drive it.

Remove the filter shake it dry(shouldn't be wet after sittign over night) and clean it. Pull the plugs like mentioned earlier and crank the motor over a few times to ensure the water gets shot out(Shouldn't be any in their if you drove it and it ran fine tell you got on it). And if your really paranoid get the oil changed. I'm guessing somethign eletrical got wet.

It sounds like you only ingested enough water to make your MAF hiccup. Pull the plugs and check your oil, as mentioned, but chances are you're fine.

sounds good. because it drove fine but that jerking made my heart skip. well ill take a better look at it. i haven't opened the hood since last night. but i appreciate the help. it sounds like it will be fine.
thanks again

check the plugs, drain the oil, change the filter. water does not combust and will take the path of least resistance out of any passage - principles which are disasterous for engines.

You could have got your filter way wet and it was jerking when some water would get sucked off the filter into ur motor or maf under boost. If it ran and starts your good just check stuff as said above then let it idle for a lil.
