"Premium Fuel Only" . . .

When I got my 08.5 MS3 all three dealers I was involved with told me that I SHOULD run premium but didn't HAVE to. They told me that when gas prices went through the roof Mazda retuned the engine to be able to handle 87 octane.

How true is that? Not sure. I did get the same story more or less from all 3 dealers. I have put the occasional tank of low grade in but only a couple of times. I have never seen much difference in performance either way. Most of the time I use 91 or 93 because its what's recommended ... and it keeps engine sludge to a minimum.

The ECU is tuned to recognize detonation. Detonation occurs more commonly when running a fuel with a lower octane rating than you are tuned/built for.

When you run 87 octane, your ECU will detect knock and cut timing and inject extra fuel to keep your engine safe. This is the theory anyway.

You are better off running the higher octane fuel. You might get away with 87 octane for a while, or for years but if you want your engine to last as long as possible, 91 octane or better is what you should burn.

Remember, it only takes one good stint of detonation to finish your engine.

The popping just makes it more fun. It's like a bucking bronco on top of everything else. I usually mix the economy gas with some peanut oil, green tea and a mix of Drakkar Noir or Old Spice depending whether 70s or 80s nostalgia is cooler. So the car pops and bucks and fills my travels with a uniquely appetizing, quasi nostalgic scent. That's how I interpret "Super Unique," anyway. (Besides, can it be worse than Seafoam?)

I'm surprised how many people are missing the joke. On a quasi-related to insanity note, I looked at a used Subaru and saw the dealer had installed "Primewell" tires. While doing some research and finding that they are very cheap and basic, I came across a thread at a BMW forum where some guy had bought them for an M3. So, there, you may direct your ire at that guy, because unlike the OP here, he wasn't kidding.

I use Country Crock, but with only the kind with added calcium. It strengthens growing rods and keeps cholesterol in check.

If I fill up in the morning I sometimes dump 2 raw eggs and some OJ in the tank.

On the weekends I like to run er on pure 100% goats blood... still warm if possible. It gives the exhaust note a real "Kill your parents, ...Lucifer is your lord" kinda tone.

If you can't afford the gas you're supposed to run, you shouldn't be in the car.(screwy) How someone could afford a new(er) car like a MS3, but can't afford good gas is beyond me.

Well said. I did a cost comparison between this and many other cars in the mid to large sedan categories. Even paying $0.20 more per gallon, the MS3 beats out the majority of them when it comes to the factory rated mpg's. We all did good in our purchases (group) .

You guys are crazy, this car runs on E85. I've been putting it in since day one. Gets 36 MPG and hauls ass.

I've seen it out in Iowa...is it available in the suburbs?

I always put 93... expensive crap. I interpreted the 'super unique' to mean not just premium (91), but super premium (93).
