Has anyone ever noticed the message when you open the gas cap? I have been driving with 87 octane since I purchased the car. It gurgles and pops a lot, but I figured that was normal. Should I be using different gas?

haha! got ya! the real question is:
Has anyone noticed that below "Premium Fuel Only," the gas lid also states, "Super Unique." Is that just an egotistical Mazda engineer being cute, or does it actually mean something?

Uhm yes, you should be using a different gas, PREMIUM!

If your gas cap said diesel only, would you run 87? (detect)

I believe that "Super Unique" may be the French term for Premium fuel.

Yah the sales guy told me, "only premium, maybe 87 once or twice but that's even a bad idea." PREMIUM ever since!!

My dealer said the same thing. The book says 87 only if ya just gotta! The only time I goofed on the gas choice thing was on my C. I knew better, but just grabbed the wrong nozzle. That was early on. Since then, it's been at least 89, more likely 90 or 91.

I've been putting diesel in my Speed ever since I got it. I love the sound the engine makes, but the soot is pretty bad.

LOL - my Dad had a brain fart and put 87 in his diesel van once on a trip home from Florida to Wisconsin. Needless to say, his trip was extended a couple days.

Why not just put in 91 or higher every time? Is it where you live?

I've heard of plenty of incidents were none premium really screwed up peoples vehicle which called for at least 91+

I think I would run a tank of 102 unleaded race fuel if I screwed up and filled with none premium.

I think people would choose non premium fuel when they're low on cash and really needs fuel.

I guess but I would never sacrifice the reliability of my vehicle to save a couple bucks at the tank.

Only thing you'll sacrifice is performance. As long you don't go WOT and stuff car will be fine. Never tried this myself but people who have says their cars drives fine after adding premium fuel back again of course. If someone has to do this I suggest to add just enough non premium to where it can take you to fill up more premium fuel. Mazda say it's fine to do it this way as an emergency situation so if the car fcks up it will be taken care under warranty. For me though I wouldn't use non premium gasoline either.

no sir. Wut about partial thorttle? People still hit some amount of boost and on this motor, never worth the risk. even 91oct isnt good enough for this car, unless you have a cali model. But federal models need 93.

I wouldn't count on Mazda taking care of the bill if that happened. And no, performance ISN'T the only thing potentially damaged when the failure to use the proper fuel occurs. Yeah the manual says that if you absolutely have to - in case of an emergency (premium isnt available) go ahead and use none premium. However, some MS3 owners have done this with bad consequences not just "lack of performance". Visit the other forums for more detail. Personally Id carry a few extra gallons of 93 octane with me if I planned on taking a trip to places Im not familiar.

Exactly! At the bare minimum this car needs 93 really. Putting 87/89 in the tank is problems waiting to happen. That Mazda says and reality aren't always the same.

If you can't afford the gas you're supposed to run, you shouldn't be in the car.(screwy) How someone could afford a new(er) car like a MS3, but can't afford good gas is beyond me.

I dunno. This world is a mysterious place lol.

I noticed the Super Unique on Saturday, right after I noticed the ******* gas strap broke.
