Pre Amp Voltage questions

I have seen some head units that now have upwards of 6V Pre-outs. Is there a level at which too high of a voltage will damage an amplifier? I have a A/D/S 6.25 PowerPlate amplifier if that means anything...

Welp...it basically mains you won't have to crank the gains too much and you should get a cleaner signal (at least at 6V)...I'm not sure if going too high can hurt it, though I assume it could cause distortion in the circuit. Speaker level is usually anywhere from 3-20V, and that's stepped down to usable voltage either by the amp or an LOC. I think 6 is generally the MAX that most amps want for preamp signal.

Actually there are some amps that accept much higher voltage input signals. The higher the voltage, the cleaner the signal will be.

This is a great question. I'm looking at the Pioneer deh-7500mp and the Pioneer Premier deh-750mp. The main difference between the two, other than the 750 being $25 more, is 6V pre out on the 750 vs 4V on the 7500. Oh yea and the 750 also has downloadabe screen savers and whatnot.

Is the extra 2V really worth it as far as the sound quality/clairity goes? Could one really tell the difference in the music even after amplification? I've noiced that the Alpine decks in this price range (9807 - 9813) only offer up to 4V. Is this some sort of marketing gimic by Pioneer so that they can sell you a "Premier" unit? Or is it legit?

For the same price is the 4 x time correction, fast file searching, and the media expander on the Alpine 9811 a better buy than the Pioneer 750mp? I'm not really interested in the organic desplay crap anyway...

Anyone with either one of these HU's want to chime in here....

Dunno really about the Headunits, but the 6v thing isn't a bunch of hullaballoo...the less you have to turn up your gains, the cleaner your signal will be...even with 2V difference.

However...as much as I think Pio's premier line is pretty neat...I'd still take an Alpine or Eclipse over that in a second.

Yes, an amplifer needs to be able to accept that voltage level. Any reputable amp company will publish there input capabilities.

However!!!!!
Keep in mind these are marketing volts and are much the same as peak verse rms power levels. These units will never put out that much voltage without all the boosting circuits on and clipping like crazy.

The idea of higher preoout voltage is to reduce induced noise along the RCA cable and to allow for a lower amplifier gain possition to also help reduce noise created in the amplifier.

There is some BS here.

1. There really isn't a significant amount of noise reduction from a preout that has a 2.7 volt output from a unit with a 5 volt. 2 volts will reject most noise that can be rejected. Other then that the extra voltage surely won't cure an installation problem like running the RCAs and power wire together.

2. Any decent amp will not produce extra noise that is in any way audible from amping a 2 volt signal compared to a 6 volt signal. Thats what the gain is for, to tell the amp what level it is getting.

3. How many people do you know that use a DMM to set gain. Damn near no one. Most people turn the gain up well passed where the published output voltage of the head unit say it should be. Hence all the increased SQ benefit of a lower gain setting are again right out the damn window. Not to mention now clipping is more likely with musical burst.

I have tested various head units out put with my audio control EQ. It has an input voltage LED set that tells you what the voltage coming in is at. Even witha 5 volt output, the 2 volt light is not steady with the music without all the bad boosting circuits turned on. Alpine, pioneer, kenwood, eclipse, clarion. All are full of crap. Those listed voltages are peak numbers. Ignore them and shop with your ears.

In my world champion I have a Alpine 4v headunit, but that is not running anythingout of the RCAs I am using a Alpine PRA-h400 which has 6 sets of 4v outputs. And In a Ford which are known for noise it is dead quit. Most of the newer amps would handle a higher vo;tage input but some of the older ones will not. If in doubt check with the manufacturer.

Ah-buh?!?! We have a world champion on here?!?! Neat! Post pics and specs...I mean, don't give away your secrets, but that's just really cool!

I took the USACi world champion in 2002 in Basic pro. my system is:
Alpine 7840 CD head
Alpine PRA-H400 digital X over
PPI Amps
JL Audio Speakers
JL Audio 12w3 D6
Wish I would have made it this year but my comp car is down with a blown motor. but my New project is My P 5.
