Potential new owner... cargo space questions

I'm moving on from my BMW 135i coupe to something that can handle my dog (and dog crate) and mountain bikes. Going from a real sporty, small car to this will be a little jarring for me I think, but I test drove one of the 2013s awhile back and this is the only one I want... I just hope it can accommodate my needs.

Does anyone here put their bikes in the back instead of using a bike hitch? Seems like it would be a real tight fit. Can you get some sort of rubber lining for this? Also, if you do have a bike hitch... any recommendations there?

I'm going to measure my dog crate and go to the dealership to make sure the crate will fit before I buy.

You'll definitely want to take your dog crate and bike to the dealership. I can't see putting an adult size bike in the back of my car. The create of course will depend on the size.

Hi there,
I put a bike in the trunk once... but it was a 20" wheel child's bike. While having a rubber mat is great, I don't know why would you want to get your car all dirty and put bikes inside? But that's just me.
Also I don't think dog's crate AND bikes would fit -- however depending on the size of the dog and its crate.

I am also looking to put a hitch with bike rack - just been putting it off till spring.. too cold to ride a bike anyway. Sorry can't offer more advice on this one.

Yes, you can easily fit two road bikes (laid down with a blanket between) with one being size 56. My wife and I do triathlons and we put all of our gear in there. It's tight with that much stuff, but beats the Mazda 3 I had. LOL! Good luck!

I have a thule revolver bike rack. Its great that it can swing totally away from the car making it perfect for accessing the hatch with it attached. For camping its also perfect as it can just sit on the side of the car secured, but out of the way. It needs a 2" hitch tho like most good bike racks.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the cargo opening? Not the dimensions inside the cargo area....

I would like to know what is the biggest box I could put in there.

I didnt get one for my cx5 yet. I bought it for my wifes sorento. Im looking to buy the 2" curt tho for the cx5. 2" is the way to go for sure. You can use both 2" and the smaller 1.25" with a cheap adaptor. But if u get the 1.25" hitch from the start you can never use 2" stuff.

Ok true but thats much less than ideal. One it will require a 2nd bolt lock through the hitches and two it will extend the weight of the hitch load further out from its center point lowering the hitches load rating. And the cost of that adapter is more than the cost difference of the 2" hitch to begin with.
