Where do I start???

We have an 06 Mazda 5 and an 05 Mazda 3. We love them both.

We are thinking about buying a pop up trailer. I am just starting the research. Now it looks like the hitch is the problem.

Is there anybody out there who has a Mazda5 and is towing a pop up trailer?

It would be great to get some information if it works.

Thanks
Hyronimus

What's the weight of the trailer?
I have a 1200lb tent (pop-up) trailer and I use our MPV to pull it. The Mazda5 cannot pull somethign this heavy.

I don't know how may people you're trying to accommodate, but there are a number of manufacturers who make smaller trailers -- ones that you'd have no problem towing.

For example: http://www.livinlite.com/5.0-overview.php

These smaller trailers can often be found at half price, a couple of years old, after they're out-grown. In this size range, you'll hardly realize the trailer is there.

I'd be more concerned about the width of a full size pop-up trailer, than 1000 lbs of weight -- if properly balanced. You can always add brakes to the trailer for a few hundred dollars. The wind drag of a larger trailer will always be there however.

If there are just two of you, buy or make one of these: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=teardrop+trailer&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=teardrop+tr

If I recall the quote in chapter 7 of the manual...

DO NOT TOW WITH THE MAZDA 5

Thanks but that is mazda's word.

So now explain why when I go to Quebec I see mazda protege's towing 19 foot trailers eh...got to love it.

They may not recommend towing with the 5 because the weight of the vehicle may already be at the platform's limit, whereas the Protege5/3 have towing capacity to spare on their platform/engines.

Mini 13 - 950 lbs, 13'-10" long, 4 person sleeping
capacity.

Eco 12 - 750 lbs, 12'-10" long, 2 person sleeping capacity.

Or just get a tent - 12 lbs, 8'x7' + storage vestibule, 4 person sleeping capacity. lol.

Another random guy's thoughts on trailering

I've been looking into it also. I'm in WI, and turns out there are a lot of cheap small campers available in this economy.
I know in US manuals, it says no towing, think other countries says up to 1000 or 1500 lbs, can't remember whitch, but same as the MZ3. For that weight, you have to get one of those little trailers like posted above.

Even most of the smallest 'pop-ups' from Jayco or Dutchmen start around 1200 or 1400 lbs DRY. Reminder that means before you put food in the fridge, hide suitcases in there, or add the propane tank or water/wastewater if so equipped.
Check weight before you buy, especially if you want to easily drive up/down hills for example. I'd be less concerned here in Wisconsin, or even going west through the plains short of the rockies, than I would anywhere with 'real hills'.

I wanted to pick up one, but think I'm gonna wait till I've got a 6-cyl minivan again in another kid or two. It just feels a little too close, and a bit too much of a compromise, to try and pick up a baby trailer made for 4 people, we'd barely fit already...

Hey zoom5zoom dont you find find ironic that they say dont tow but will sell you a hitch and even install it?? They won't sell you a wiring kit becasue one doesn't exist, but they will tell you to buy a kit for CX9 without the towing package......

DKaz, I don't think its because the platform is at it's limit. My guess is because in North America we just dont have the small trailers (caravans) they have in Europe. The Europen vs NA cars are identicle body wise. Other than engines and transmissions almost everything mechanical is the same. Our pertol engine is more powerful than theirs 2.3l vs 1.8l & 2.0l, but they can also get a 6 speed manual with a 2.0l diesel. The curb weights are with in a few KG's, but they also have stricter laws on trailer brakes and towing restrictions as well. Their tow bars are also different but I dont think that plays much of a role. In the end, I believe the main reason is the weight of available trailers and towing laws.
