i've seen mention of people saying that turboing an automatic protege5 will more than likely do more harm than good, most specifically to the transmission.

the question i have is...

what about the automatics that have the manual / tiptronic mode to them? i have an auto-p5 with the tiptronic transmission, and i was going to buy the mazdaspeed turbo kit for it. if this is going to be more detrimental to me, than i'm going to save the money and use it somewhere else.

If u want to turbo an auto u need a tranny upgrade... either a new torque convertor or valvebody upgrade..... they arent expensive(compared to a manual clutch or flywheel) and will guarantee that u r protected....
www.lentechautomatics.com
the tranny's are basically identical and having spoken to them they can help u out.
they have a 385hp focus drag racer....nuff said

If I want to, I don't get a break in the sound when I shift (dunno) ;)
And, if I want to, I GET that "oh so cool break in the sound" when I shift. 'Cause, boy-o-boy, does that make me feel great.................

Akhilleus How much would it cost $$$$ to build a bulliet-proof auto tranny? Let's say good enough for like 210hp-220hp 12psi+

well u would need a new torque convertor... lentech said the strip/street would be good(stage 1) $400 and a new valvebody is $400.... figure install everything at once another $400... maybe $1200+ to more or less "bulletproof" it. They are also making a plate differential which will be fairly affordable.... apparently its a weak area of the tranny. oh and a tranny cooler($40-$80)
honestly it would cost as much to rebuild a manual with ACT and fidanza... and the torque convertor wont wear out like a clutch will.
Or u can always buy a total rebuilt tranny.... they might make some other modifications... but from what they said u only need a valvebody, cooler, and torque convertor.... unless u are that wild focus :D

So what would be cheaper manual swap or beef up the auto tranny?

a manual swap is pointless.... it would be at least $3k-4k just for the tranny... plus installing it would be mucho dinero.... a properly modded auto tranny will be quicker off the line than a manual any day... and with the valvebody the shifts would be more precise and responsive.

pirana's car was also mostly a show car, DeckedoutMP5 burned his tranny to hell when put in his highboost Kit

my opinion, the only automatic's worth fixing up come with huge V8 engines attached

um ive seen a street legal 3rd gen RX7 auto run high 7's in the quarter mile, and what about the titan motorsports supra, also an auto and that thing OWNS!! as far as autoX/ road racing auto is a no no... u wear the crap out of the braking system.. but if i had an auto i would definitly mod it... but i love my 5-speed

Will See!!!!!

It's funny that people are mentioning mostly crazy shop sponsored cars. Bottom line, if it isn't a V8 or high hp car stock and has an auto, it's not worth it.

well concidering an auto can handle more power than an MT i would ONLY put performance mods into it, no ICE or anykinda BS,

lower w/ rims, and then turbo

Auto can handle more power than manual?? I think you've got things switched.

so is having a sequential gear box considered auto or manual? you don't have a clutch, but you gotta change gears yourself.

It has a torque converter right? If so, it's an auto to me.
