the zoom zoom boom club :(

After four years (next tuesday) and 90,000 miles at 12lbs, "unmodded", my luck finally ran out. For the past two weeks there was a loud ticking noise on half throttle. Asked my brother (mechanic) and he said it was merely a valve, no worries. Last night, driving to my company holiday party, doing about 35mph, the ticking got really really loud, crunch crunch Kablooeee all to hell. I could hear parts flying underneath my seat and what sounded like out of the exhaust pipe. A quick flame and more smoke from under the hood than all of San Diego this past summer. The car immediately died. More alarms and lights on the dash panel than Apollo 13. Lost power steering... completely dead. Had to push it off of the 8 lane road. I towed it over to Lou Bachrodt (hoping and praying it was merely the tranny that I just put in back in July, since it is still under warranty). No such luck. Head is torn to hell and there's a huge hole in the bottom of the block.

They tried turning it over this morning and my car shat all over thier driveway. hehe. Parts all over the garage. lol. Suffice to say I don't think I will be purchasing the new engine from them (6k +tax). That, and they don't know if the turbo's toast until we mount it to a new engine. So, it could be 6k + turbo + tax.

Now for the fun part... what to do?

a) cut my losses and buy a new car (probably regular mazda3)

b) build a badass forged engine w/ the works and keep this car for another 4 -5 years

Here's the kicker for option a).... 13k left on the car.... do I really want a 30k mazda3?

As for option b) (which is most likely what I'm going to do), I have "sub-options", if you will.

Do I go to the junk yard and buy a used 2.0 and tear it apart, putting all the "goodies" in it myself?

Do I call up one of our kickass vendors and just get the forged engine already made? (think like TBK, Protege garage, speedcircuit)

Do I try to salvage all the parts that are "ok" from the old block? (like the water pump, oil pump etc) and buy a "new" block, adding the goodies to it, minus the parts left over?

Disco Potato while I'm at it?

This is my thought process right now... I have wayyy too much left on this car. Do I want to drop 5-10k and have everything the way it should've been from mazda to begin with?
- LOL No longer options

I can rationalize that it would pretty much be a "new" car, since everything needs to be replaced, that should last another 4 to 5 years. So, numbers-wise, I'm bought a new car for 17k in Dec. 2003 and now another 10k (over estimate) to last me another 4 years. 27k total (minus finance charges, which btw won't be added to the new 10k). The "missing" 9k which is why i'm still at 13k is another long drawn out story that I'd rather not get into right now.

So anyways, 27k to have two cars over 8 years doesn't seem so bad. The first one was the '03.5 mazdaspeed protege, 167 whp. The second one will be a '03.5.2 mazdaspeed protege 250?whp.

What does everyone think? Are there other options (other than the mysterious disappearance of my car) that I haven't thought of?

ProtegeGarage has engines for $999. Check out their site, as that was what I was looking into when mine went.

have you been checking your oil? sorry to hear Sean but it was ticking since the last meet in markham park....

Thank you, Ken, didn't want to bother you on the weekend...

MS3 is out of the question. They could never hide, plus or minus, 7-10k in it. Don't really want a 40k payment.

Jaime, this was a "new" kind of ticking noise... lol. The kind where you say to yourself, "$hit, this engine is gonna go, soon." Oil was changed in the past 800 miles- full synthetic.

I'm really not "down" about it, I mean, I was well aware boosting 12lbs for, quite literally, 90k miles with a stock block, no tuning and the stock (minus cats) exhaust was a hell-of-a gamble. It does piss me off that the head failed and not the bottom, though, lol. Right now, I'm more about finding solutions to the problem.

Ken, I'll give you a break for the weekend and call you on Monday :)

Sorry to hear. I feel your pain. Last year this time I was going through the same thing. Luckily I got a used MSP engine with about 26K on it. My thought rebuild and enjoy. Best of luck. All you need is a good tech to install and tune.

very very long story.

I bought this car Dec 18, 2003. I didn't necessarily need a new car, but my little brother went and did something really stupid. He owned a 2001 Integra GSR. He financed it over 6 years and then hit a school bus. Damage to the driver fender. Rather than trading it in, he went out and bought a nissan frontier. He thought he could sell his cool 2fast 2furious GSR privately. He didn't. My parents asked me to trade his car in, since it was about time I bought a "new" car. He owed 15k, it's "true" value was 6k.

My MSP's MSRP was 21k. There was a $2500.00 rebate. I got them down to 18k, then the 2500 rebate put me at 15.5. Add the 9k from my brother's car and I was at 24.5k. +Taxes tags, etc, it was a little over 26k, total. $1250 cash down and I financed $24,9XX over the five years. I was a first time "new" car buyer (another rediculous story) so they hit me for 12.99%. $563.00/mo. My brother was supposed to give me $150.00/month for 6 years to offset the $563.00. Yeah, haven't seen a dime yet. I had to refinance in Dec 05 to bring down the rediculous payment. $363.00/mo... it'll finally be mine in Dec '10.

Parents just told me yesterday that they hope I learned my lesson and won't be helping me w/ fixing it. Went by the dealership yesterday, there's no way to hide 11,700 (turns out the payoff is 1300 less than I thought) in any car. So, I'm screwed :)

Ironically, 9K @ 12.99 for 48 mos. (which is exactly how long I've had the car) is $11,587.20. Basically what my brother owes me. Although, in reality, it's my name, it's my debt and since he won't be paying me anytime soon, as he hasn't given me a penny since I bought the car, it's my problem.

So, here are the morals of this story:

A) lol, don't boost 12lbs for 90k miles in an "unmodded" MSP.
B) Never, ever, ever try to help your family out, financially.
C) Never, ever, ever believe that your family will help you out in the same fashion.

So, that is how I still have $11,700 left on this car.

damn man, that blows. why don't you call around and see if anyone local can get you an FS with low miles.

and ROFL @ the moral of the story.

I had been in deep thought over the same thing as you but without the blown motor issue. I came into my P5 with $5000 negative equity which I finally got paid off last year. After roughly $18000+ in mods I finally decided to do what realistically needed to be done so I am now waiting for my Speedcircuit forged block w/ stage 1 head to get finished.

To make things more clear for you, thats only part of the problem with these cars so unless you're willing to put a few more $$ to address the problems with the tranny your just waiting for the next weak link.

Since you really haven't spent much on the car you may be better off with just throwing a used motor in there and trade it in for a better platform.

Or plan to shell out at minimum $10k to have a reliable DD!

I know how you feel, i had my forged motor crap out on me over a stupid oil leak.I thought about swapping in a used stock motor and selling it but with all the money spent on the car i had to fix it. If your looking to get your car running again do it right and go forged.Speedcircuit is the way to go.Kooldino is putting my motor back together right now, and im just waiting on the piston rings and custom cams from integral for my speedcircuit stage 2 head.

I can check my contact to see if you can get a local engine. Let me know.

No worries about the tranny, lol just replaced that in July! I have the old one sitting at home just waiting.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to be keeping this car for a while, whether it runs or not. I'm fortunate that I still have a "means" of transportation, so my MSP is pretty much going to be my hobby for the next year or so. I think just throwing another engine in it is a bandaid for a gash in need of stitches.

But, the good news is... is we're gonna have a bunch of sweet blown-up parts for the raffle and awards at Mazdawinterpalooza '08! lol.

Pop the ignition and run it into a lake. Whoops (boom04)

Make sure you set it on fire first and then post on YouTube.

- seriously, get a Speed3. No need for extra boost or whatever when the power is all there.

I can't justify spending 23 to 25k on a MS3. That, and they can't bury the difference of what I still owe on the car. The HP of the MS3 is nice, but I like the conservative look of the MSP.

If the MSP did go swimming, I'd lose even more money. Oh, which reminds me...
