ok, heres the deal,

bone stock car, exept for a drop in K&N filter in the STOCK air box and i added my turbosmart MBC and set it at 7.5-8 psi with spiking to 9 at times... i this this to JUST be a little bit over the stock range of 6.. of course turbo is louder and will spool up faster at equivalent pedal position from before.

everything seems dandy for now and it pulls harder of course..

oh and will be adding hard piping shortly

question : am i a future zoom zoom boom club member ? or am i cool to leave it like it is.. NEVER to give it more.

should i put on colder plugs to give me a chance?

lay it on me people, am i playing dice with god and will lose sometime or another? i baby the thing and i am not always at WOT

I would suggest opening the exhaust up. I have run 10psi for the last two years with just the K&N drop in, Vibrant exhaust and front MM with no problems yet. I don't dog the car and don't hit boost all that often.

Well when i first put my turbokit on my car i was running 8 psi and really lean 13:1 a/f on a stock motor and beat the hell out of it for 3 months and she ran great. But i also had a fmic and 3" exhaust. i know that the mazdaspeeds runs really rich so you should be alright.

i have thought about taking out the cats with a specially made pipe a guy i know could make me(in 100% stainless) but the problem here is that the cops are on everybody's back about the exaust loudness..

they got manuals in their cars about the WHOLE stock exaust of cars and takes pics and take tools to check out if ya got a stock.. if ya don't you get a nice 250$ ticket... i've heard some msp owner having problems showing them that the msp has a STOCK exaust as it is not listed in their manuals..

what use would have opening up the exaust if i have a cop up my ass evertyime i go to the mall or for a ride..

oh and whats "front MM " ???(boom08)

if you are worried about noise from a full exhaust system just get a mid-pipe, i got the one from sls and i can barely notice the difference.

maybe it wasnt worth getting.

at least a catted midpipe if not full exhaust as well as an upgraded IC, then EMS of some sort...the Split Second AFC would be great

Totally agree, I've felt like the stock exhaust holds a lot of heat in and the car runs better with a free flowing exhaust.

i was talking about the noise, not the performance. as for performance i did notice better throttle response with my butt dyno

so if i cannot put an exaust not a smic in a near futur i should ease off the boost right?

i though EMS was only necessary above 10 psi... im running 7.5 -8 in 4th and 5th gear.. 6.5-7 in 3rd

If you just put the mid pipe with a high flow cat and kept the stock cat back it would help alot. You got the K&N to get more air in the motor now you need something to help get it out. I think you will be okay but you never know with these cars.

i'll revert to stock tomorrow... my job does not leave me time to blow engines... even though it 's more of a semi daily driver..

the spikes are freaking me out.. even at the minimum of the MBC i see 7 psi and spikes to 9...

this was a try out but without any other mods.. i'll put this on ice for now..

thanks guys..

i think that you will be just fine running at that boost level. first mod i would do is exhaust. get a catless midpipe from sls or catted if you need catted. it will make your exhaust just a tad bit louder but you will definately feel an increase in power.

I don't know. I feel uneasy at anything over stock. I've got a midpipe and an afc awaiting install and I'm at 8 psi. I say grab a credit card and drop the bucks on an afc. Anyone willing to push there msp owe's it to there car. After that I say go for whatever and just enjoy your ride. We've heard of storys of msp's breaking at stock boost. If you can't afford the downtime I'd stick to stock boost and bolt ons.

Another option for reliable boost increase is the spring mod.

These motors are inconsistent at best. Some pop with little to no modding, some take a daily raping and keep going, theres no way to tell which yours is but I will give you my experience so far with mine. Before I did anything to the boost I installed a boost gauge first and put in one step colder plugs. I also had a K&N drop in and a straight pipe where the stock muffler would be, but I doubt those make any difference in anything. I upped the boost to similar numbers as you are using with a JoeP MBC when I had 12k on the odo.

After awhile I got really tired of the spiking so I did the spring mod. It definitly helped get rid of the spiking, the trick is to install it in the winter time when it is cold out. I notice that in the winter I usually hit around 9.5 psi and in the summertime I boost around 8.5. If you set the spring for 9.5psi in the summertime you'll be bouncing off the fuel cut come winter. I now have 65k on the odo and haven't had any problems at all. I'm pretty good to my car though, I only get into boost when I need to.
