Pirelli Winter 210 SnowSport vs Dunlop Graspic DS-2

i wanted to get some winter tire on my stock p5 rims
think theres only 2 option on tire rack
either Pirelli Winter 210 SnowSport or Dunlop Graspic DS-2
any suggestiong

They are very different tires (Pirelli vs Dunlop). I know the DS-1 and 210 Snowsports well. The Pirelli perform just as good as a good A/S tire, much stiffer sidewall and all, BUT they are so-so in wet snow condition (like the snow in spring or when they put salt afer a big snowfall). They are great for ice, packed dry snow and incredible on the dry, but not as safe as Dunlop. Those Graspic are great everywhere except on the dry (alphalt).

So it depends where you live and where you drive. I heard that Michelin X-Ice are great tires, possibly a good compromise btw those 2...

I live in Calgary, so Im not sure where you can get some. I paid $160cdn for my 195/55/15, these are very good tires though.

i've got a set of 210 snowsports. they are pretty decent tires, but i dont make the mistake i did and get them the same size as stock, 195-50-16. narrower tires are better for winter driving, there is more pressure per square inch between the tire and the road. That usually translates into better traction.

I have the 210 Snowsports 195/55/15.

Fantastic on dry winter roads. Good for snow. Okay for ice. Fantastic in rain and slush.

Next tire I'd love to try would be the Hankook W300 Icebear.

I like my SnowSports. My Michelin Artic Alpins were much nicer though...I would like to try to Nokians, everyone seems to like them.

I have the pirelli wintersport. Had them for 2 winters now. Good tire for winter driving, but still does very well for dry pavement. One word is that the tire is not great with a lot of snow. But if it's packed down or a little bit wet they are ok. I haven't done too much driving with it on ice, but my experience (MI roads) is that they are decent and doesn't have as much grip as on the snow surface. But who would want to drive fast on ice anyway.

does 205/50R16 or 205/45R60 fit on the p5 stock rim?

I have the Dunlop Winter Sport M3s for my stock 14s. Those don't come in your size? They're the highest rated winter tire on TireRack.

they have it for 205/45R16...

When you go to TireRack and look at the tire, you can click on "specs" and it will show you the safe range of wheel widths to install each tire size.
So look up 205/45/16 and see what it says. As long as you know the stock wheel width...

don't run a wider than stock winter tire.
If your're going to change the size, go narrower.
Better yet, save some $ and get 14 or 15 inch winters on steel wheels.

Agreed. I run the stock size 185/65/14 on my steelies in the winter. I have 205/45/15s on my alloys.

yea i am looking at 195/55R16
its a little bit higher than the stock tires..
i am not sure it it would work
what does higher profile tires do ?

profile is a ratio of wheel dia. Vs. tire width.

I think taller sidewalls are better in the snow because they offer more flex, which aids in snow traction. I'm not exactly sure though.
