Pinnacle of auto racing

What do you guys think is the pinnacle event of autoracing? The worlds most watched event?!

I am crazy about WRC but I dont dare say it has a pinnacle event in autoracing.

Indy 500?
NASCRAP? Daytona?
Grand Prix of Monaco?

I would still think the Indy 500 is right up there...although in the past few years, with the crap between the IRL and CART, I think it has lost a bit of its shine.

I went to the 73rd running of the INDY 500 as part of a fund-raiser for Missing & Exploited Children (dropped $3000) and met drivers, got out on the track in the pace cars...(Cadilliacs that year), did a presentation at the museum. Lots of fun, great race.

I would have to say the Indy 500.

NASCAR (NASCRAP) as you put it is exciting because of the speed. All they do is turn left, though, and one race a season they turn right. How hard is that? Damn, what a way to make a living!

The GT Series has come on strong, too, though.

Anyone watch the Isle of Man TT this weekend on Speed(NASCAR) channel? I love watching the bikes fly through the tiny little town at 170mph+.

I will still have to say the INDY 500 is the biggest single event though.

I think over the course of an entire season it'd have to be NASCAR....I like the sounds of it, but I enjoy other racing a lot more because I like to see turns a lot. WRC is one of my favorites I'd say.

Remember, I am talking about the WORLD here not just north America. I dont think Nascar has much of a following anywhere except here and Canada.

I forgot Le Mans. Now thats a race!

I would have to say the GP of Monaco because it is the biggest racing event in the world, more people watch Monaco than any other race in the WORLD! Second comes LE Mans and I forgot the 3rd event.

Also F1 Teams have perhaps the best drivers(they have drivers from all the world...unlike NASCAR lol) The have the most technologicaly advanced vehicles on the planet. Top F1 teams have the biggest bugets(Top Nascar is like 25% of that of an F1 team:eek: ) F1 actually races on real race tracks. Dont get me wrong I only watch a few F1 races a year like MONACO:D , but I am WRC all the way baby!! I just like that there cars actually resemble real cars on the street. anyways thats my 2cents.

Who do you think is the best driver of all time?
Fangio? Hill? Senna? Schumachar? and others that I did not mention

I second 24 hours of Le Mans as the ultimate in autoracing, although Indy 500 IS known as 'The Greatest Spectacle in Autoracing'

I wish that the WRC had a single huge event like Le Mans or Indy because I would pick that. The closest they have is the Monte Carlo Rally or the Paris to Dakaar Rally and they are not quite the same. For lack of that, I would have to pick the 24 hours of Le Mans.

My pick for best driver would have to be someone like Vic Elford or Walter Rohl. I think Walter Rohl. He won a championship in Group B rally, he won championships in sportcars in both Europe and the USA. I am not sure what else he did but that is enough for me. Vic Elford I guess would have to be a close second.

I could be convinced that it is John Surtees the 1964 F1 champion. Here is a short blurb on him from: http://www.iomtt.com/results/rider.asp?ride_id=1641.

Truly a one-off hero John Surtees is the only man to ever win a World Drivers Championship on two and four wheels. Altogether Surtees competed in 15 TT races and finished in all except the 1956 Junior. He rode Nortons first in 1954 finishing 11th in the Junior and 15th in the Senior. He turned to MV Agusta in 1956 and his record reads - 1956 Senior 1st, 1957 Junior 4th, Senior 2nd, 1958 Junior and Senior 1st, a feat he repeated in 1959, and 1960 Senior 1st and Junior 2nd. An enviable record! At the end of the 1960 season, Surtees decided to finish his motorcycling career and turned to four wheels, going on to win the F1 World Drivers Championship. His immaculate style and preparation of his racing machines was a winning combination; his speed on track and sportsmanship off it made him a well-loved and popular figure.
