Performance Drop-Off?!?

I managed 34 mpg once, but it was going from Miami to Key West, and the speed limit on that road was 45mph...

think about it, perfectly flat, mid 70's temps, no wind to speak of, and crusing @ 45mph, thats about as ideal conditions you are going to find. Normal high speed highway cruising yields only 24 to 25mpg. Which is my overall average.

It was with the wind and I was using hypermiling techniques (allowing the car to accelerate downhill, slow down uphill), but I was doing no less than 110 km/h when cruising, which is around 70 mph.

I did that on 12 gallons. I have a picture on my cellphone of my trip odometer and fuel gage at home.

Going the other way, I got 26 MPG but I was passing with a heavy foot, boosting past trucks, and I won't say how fast I was generally sticking to (headbang), and 27.5 MPG going 75 mph to a concert in cooler temperatures, into the wind.

I must have hit the DISI sweet spot, but 38 MPG a dammmmn good. I think 45 mph is below the sweet spot where you're covering enough distance for fuel burned.
