Pennzoil Platinum super cheap at WalMart

how is it less efficient when it can offer better protection through a higher flash point and better shear strength?

It's thicker. Thicker oil yeilds less efficiency.

That's true. It's too viscous to move efficiently throughout the motor. 5W-40 is only a temporary fix for smoking turbo problems. Other than that, only 5W-30 is neccesary. Anything beyond that will be too high of a weight to be efficient anymore.

agreed...5w40 isn't really a "sollution," and this must have only been discovered by mazda techs to be a temporary fix to the problem cuz it's not even a step in the symptom/diag procedure

5W40 has always been the recommended oil for the MPS in australia, so saying it's the "wrong" oil for the car is false!

maybe on average it's hotter in australia than it is in any other place where the ms3 is sold, so they recommend the higher viscosity

but the owners manual states 5w30 for the mazdaspeed, and 5w20 for the 2.0 and 2.3 non-turbos

the weird thing is the factory manual says 5w20 for both the turbo and non-turbo engines, and says to use 5w30 if there is "no 5w20 in your market" for all engines. weird...no wonder ppl kept complaining when the dealers were putting 5w20 in the speeds

As was already said, Australia is a hotter market than NA or Europe.

And for the record, I don't believe anyone said it was the "wrong" oil... (dunno) (screwy)

the 5W20 thing was a misprint in the early 07 ms3 owner's manuals

and so is mexico where it was also sold (but 5W30 was used)
mexico is as hot as australia if not hotter

saying 5W40 is "temporary" is just another say of saying it's the wrong oil for the car

like I said, the whole reason for the thicker oils used in some markets is for protection, not necessarily due to heat (although that does have a correlation)

Whatever dude.

I simply responded to your query as to why anyone would run 5w30 in this car. I run it because it's the specified oil to run if you're not having turbo issues. There's no good reason for me to run 5w40, so I don't. It's a less efficient viscosity than 5w30.

If you'd like to continue to put words into my mouth be my guest, but be aware that that is what you're doing.

Here's the Web site and phone number from the Pennzoil Rebate:

I didn't jot down the one for the Walmart one - it could be the same Web site from above. I'll see if I can get it from my friend since he picked up a couple this weekend too.

My guess is 5w-30 still, but you'll have a better chance at this info in the 2010 Mazda3 and MS3 forum.

Does anyone know what the manual says for the recommended oil weight for the 2010 MS3?
yes, 5W30 is still recommended for US/Canada/Mexico/Japan 2nd gen ms3s
I'm pretty sure (but not 100%) that australia is still 5W40 and perhaps europe too

keep in mind the new ms3 still uses the same pcv valve as the old one which has been said to cause the smoking problem, BUT the new ms3 also uses a different turbo so maybe they did some tricks there (like an oil restrictor)

So I'm guessing the Japanese writing under TheMAN's name really says: "Lolz suckers, I'm really an engineer at Mazda!" (gossip)

手前の言葉が俺は聞き捨てよう

appears to have used a poor translator.

Direct translation is: your words ignore (I)

So, Im guessing he is trying to poke fun and say he doesnt listen to what you are saying.

My 2 giftcards arrived today. I think I sent in the form 2-3 days after I bought the oil. This was an excellent deal.

Just checked my status online and the two $15 Walmart GCs are in the mail. The Pennzoil $15 rebate that I thought I'd try in addition is "In Process."
