I am really interested in painting my MS3 rims black. I have searched on what is needed to prep the rim and it seems I need to sand them prime and paint. I found a good tip to use index cards to eliminate getting paint on the tire. Any other things I need to know?? I dont have a lift either so I guess I will be doing two tims at a time cause I will only be able to use a floor jack. How long do they take to dry? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated!

No need to prime if you prep right by sanding with 400-600 grit "Wet or dry" paper available at your local Parts store.

Just wet sand them down thoroughly...then you can base..and clear if that that's route you are going to go.

I never reccomend painting wheels....Only powdercoating...but that a HUGE difference in price and time.

go to discount auto parts, theres a paint stripper for airplane parts of some s***, its 7 dollars a can. spray it on the rims to remove the clear coat, rinse the rims with a hose, let it dry, spray some primer on the rims, let them dry 45-1hr, 400 grit light sand on the primer then paint the rims.

He has no need to strip the OEM finish..you can't get a Base to start with Better than an OEM finish..Period.

Trust me..I actually paint.

the paint will jsut rub right off, i bought fd wheels and painted them. they were originally painted and the painted rubbed off to the touch, i had to strip the clear coat and use primer so the paint would stick...

Not if they are prepped correctly it won't. Prepping does not neccessarily mean they need stripped.
It is nice if you can strip them..but if he goes as far as to strip them..Might as well have them done right in Powdercoat.

He just need to properly sand the Surface completely and thoroughly and he will be fine.

I won't argue with you this..so W/E...you win...What do I know ?

im jsut saying tho, my experience with these fd rims shows that wet sanding the clear didnt make a difference on the surface. powdercoat is 50 a rim compared to 40 i spent for all 4 (headbang)

I know..thats why I said it puts it into a whole 'nother category of price..not to mention Down time.

thanks for the replies. Im still unsure on what Im going to do for now but at least I have an idea. I would love to get my rims powder coated but its hard to find a shop here to do it. I will wait a week or two before I make my final decision.

i had mine painted with mazda stock black mica a year ago, no prep just cleaned. no chipping, peeling, or wearing off! they look like they did when i did them. it was soo much cheaper than powder coating. it will come off if you hit a curb though!

did you have access to a lift when you did your car or did you use a jack with stands? How many coats did you do? What was drying time like?

thanks! actually, my friend works auto body and he painted them. he took tires off the rim to do. not sure on coats or dry time.
