1) Cars with body colored bumpers/grills are going to show paint chips more
2) Cars that are low to the ground are more likely to get hit by rocks
3) There are more SUVs/Trucks on the road than 5-10 years ago
4) People tailgate closer than they used to.

I don't think Mazda has to account for this. The best thing to do is stay away from trucks and SUVs and always leave one car-length per 10mph.
You have to admit that the Mazda paint is ridiculously thin even compared to similar models of different brands in the same model year.

I don't see how paint thinness has anything to do with it....if the hood of your car gets hit with a rock...its going to chip...end of story.

I will agree that the bumper is made out of really soft plastic/rubber. Where ever I have a chip, there is usually a plastic burr or a deep divit.

Ok, i understand the hoods getting chipped, but WHY IN GODS NAME do i have a crack on my passenger door that has rust coming out of it? its tiny and you cant feel it when you rub your hand over it, but my car is silver and you can damn well SEE IT. and WHERE did it come from?! cant use touch up paint, cuz its not a chip either.
GRRRRR.

My complaint is simple...someone barely hit my rear bumper in a parking lot and now there is a 3 inch scratch down to the black plastic bumper. It looks terrible, especially since I'm so anal about my car.

You guys are making me nervous. I've had my P5 for 6 months and it doesn't have the first ding, scratch or chip .... anywhere. I have the sunlight silver and love it. I pretty anal about where I park it and how close I follow other cars. I know the first blemish will come (it's a daily driver), but I am totally dreading it.

By the way, don't know if it makes a difference, but I wax mine regularly with Turtle Wax Platinum Series. The shine is good, but the hard shell protection is what I like about the wax. I also have the factory bra from Mazda. I put it on anytime I'm going to be doing instertate driving. I wax the heck out of it before I put the bra on and I never leave the bra on for more than three days to take it off, clean it and rewax the car. I think that's a big part of why this car doesn't have any dings. That .... and a whole lot of luck.

Wow that is quite the routine. No wonder you car has no chips or scratches.(hump)

I haven't noticed any problems, but I AM doing something to help keep the knicks away.. I have an appointment next week to have the front of the car covered in 3M rockguard.....

Honestly, I'm more concerned about the Foglights... Had the car a month, and took a rock right through my driver's light... No options from the factory or aftermarket for a cover, and the price for a NEW foglight is ridiculous....

how much is that rockguard running you, thats invisible right, isnt that s*** liek 2000?

I had my front bumper for 10 months or so, and had one or two chips. After a simple accident (where I had to replace the whole bumper) the new paint chipped about 6-7 times. So IMO the mazda paint wasn't all that bad. But it's no big deal, that's what touch up paint is for. There will always be chips, you just can't let it bother you or you will go crazy trying to keep the car perfect.

sounds like the nw paint job sucked worse than mazda...In no way does that mean Mazda's painting methods are at all GOOD.

Getting both bumpers repainted...gonna cost $325. The guy does good work...is it worth it?
yeah, if he's doing at least a god 4-6 coats of paint and 2-3 coats of clear and a good wetsanding and buffing, like should be done, thats a reasonable price.

IMHO, this paint is crap.

But - paint on my 02 Altima is not much better. So - I figured it is environmentaly friendly paint = can't take a beating.
