P5 versus Matrix

i make about 230HP @ 7,600rpms!..lol to the crank anyway
Dyno por favor.

I'm aware that the lotus has a 2zz, what does that have to do with a matrix? The K20A2 is a great motor, people are getting into the 12's all motor in RSX-S's. The head flows really well, I wish i could find some flow charts but I wasn't expecting to get in a debate with someone about K series motors today. All of the K's are interchangable as well. Need more displacement? Find a K24 bottom end out of a CRV. Yes, the RSX-S weighs a bit more than the GTS, RSX-S is about 2850 lbs but has alot more luxury than the buzzy, paperweight GTS.

Yes, the reason a SRT-4 is "fast" is it has a turbo. The reason the GTS is somewhat quick is it has 2 cam profiles and variable valve timing. A protege doesn't have either, it's an old-school motor made before the sport compact market really existed (early 80's) and still does reasonably well to keep up with the competition. If you skim that article that was posted, it was made to run on 87 octane because it is an economy car, which limits the technology/power, but makes it exceed at its primary function, being an economy car. :p Also note that the P5 is a 5 spd, which limits it's 1/4 a little, the tranny is old as hell too. The p5 is an old school import with a modern skin and still keeps up with modern day competition.

It's kinda neat to think about really. Just like the Civic, the D series motors are STILL around, they started using them in the early 80's and possibly late 70's as the D13/D14. Only changes to that motor in the last 20 years was a little more displacement, head design and direct ignition. Hell, I boosted a D15B7, it was a beast and was dirt cheap to do too.

(lol2) I read that post, too! If he's SO into his Matrix, then what's he doing on Mazda forums anyways? (loser)

I think the more important question is.....do Matrix's make you know Kung-Fu?

great.... which is why, I didnt understand how you could say "whos your daddy" when the comparo shows that the matrix hardly beat the P5 with bigger tires.
I didn't say "who's your daddy" and actually stated that I wouldn't say that. I feel that they are very close with the same setup so it's a draw IMO.

Oh, and before someone says it, I don't think my a Mazdaspeed is a high and mighty sport compatct :p I reserve that for the STi and EVO RS which I'd rather own any day. :)

I will also state that the 2zz-ge found in the Matrix/Corolla/Celica/Lotus is an engine meant for economy like any VTEC engine. The entire theory is to create a small engine that is very efficient below a certain RPM range which will get a ULEV or better rating. Then at a certain point, the car can switch over to a less fuel efficient cam if power is needed for passing. If you look at racing Celicas, you will discover that they only use a cam with highly advanced timing. They run all day above 6k where the power is so "bogging" down isn't an issue. Unfortunately, when taking that concept to the daily driver, you get an engine that is very peaky and less practical. I was amazed at how much more power my MSP had in any gear at 2k rpms. The Vibe GT on the other hand was near impossible to propell at 2k and need a downshift to maintain speed. The other thing that bothered me highly was that the transmission was geared in a way to make a 1-2 shift keeping lift impossible. Even a 2-3 was hard unless you shifted right before the rev limited past redline. That right there told me that Toyota was more interested in making a fuel economy engine than a true sports car.

click on the link and download the video and see how a modded XRS can leave out!

That was the biggest waste of a 10 MB file ever...I want my bandwidth back fucktard...

Adding my two cents...when I was shopping a couple of months ago, it came down to a Matrix XR (2004) and Protege5 (2002). I just wanted to test drive both, see what I liked better. The Matrix felt very nice, was quiet, and smooth. Also had decent acceleration. Then I tested the P5...rides much more firm, handles way better, seemed like it had compatible acceleration. I was sold on the drive, and didn't look back. Every day I drive my P5, I love it even more. It was what I was looking for, great handling, great brakes, great overall driving experience. I do sometimes wish I had more power, but I'm good for now...Maybe I'll look into Turbo later. HiBoost, anyone??
