P5 to MSP conversion..need help

as for a rear drive conversion...the body IS designed to accept the sport20 awd drivetrain if you are willing to spend BIG bucks on a conversion :)

OH HELL AWD!! Now that would be sweet, but would need serious power. Whats the difference in weight between the stock P5 flywheel and the MSP flywheel? I can't imagine even a pound not making a difference. On my SHO I shaved 1.5lbs and it was a big difference. The cams my dealer can order for me. I'm going to have to get the cam timing gears though. I hadn't heard of losing power with cam swapping. I just recently found out about my spring problem also. Only problem is that Racing Beat is not considered Mazda factory. So has any used the "factory re-tuned" struts and springs? The dealer said they recommend the springs from the MP3 for this. Any ideas?

The "Mazdaspeed" brand flywheel is two pounds lighter than the stock one. The MSP and P5 flywheels are the same. I can tell you from a dyno run that the flywheel made no difference.

those are racing beat made springs :) thats why i told you that racing beat sells springs designed for the p5, because thats as close to Mazda as you are going to get springwise.

your dealer is full of crap, no offense. the listing in thier parts computer even says that those springs are designed for the sedan, not the 5.

Mazda Motor Sports makes a very very light flywheel you can buy from Mitch at protege5online.com, in the competition parts section. Mazdaspeed makes the 15 lb and MMS of japan makes the 9 lb for $386; http://www.protege5online.com/For_Sale_Page/Mazda_Motor_Sports/mazda_motor_sports.html

I do believe the suspension shown on that page was taken out of production. why exactly do you need to be "mazdaspeed" only. Keep in mind there is a distinct difference between "mazdaspeed protege" parts and "mazdaspeed" parts. Mazdaspeed has long been (up until now) an independent company.

The reason I'm going Mazdaspeed only is an attempt to build up the best P5 I can while using only mazda factory parts. Using factory parts installed by the dealer will keep my warranty and should net somewhere in the 150-165hp range. I feel 30 ponies is a good deal. That's about the same as the Mazdaspeed protege stock. I'm not worried about normal wear items like brakes, clutch, tires, fluids, belts, so forth, but I'm going to be ordering a lot of parts from mazda and I figured they'd cut me a good deal. So far they have. They gave me the msp exhaust for free and are also trying to get me a mazdaspeed exhaust cam even though they are not in production anymore. So far so good. Maybe with a little canoodling I can get tha MP3 ecu flash! I'm sure after everything else is installed the flash will do more than normal.

Well, between exhaust, intake manifold, ECU, and cams I still feel 30hp is reasonable. headers and the exhaust cam should add some NICE top end power!

It can be done!! just taking it one piece at a time. Dealer called and found me the intake cam, but said they're having a hard time getting the exhaust cam. I'm wondering what I'll do without it. I've never switched intake cam without the exhuast before. I can only imagine it would make for some weird idling and acceleration problems.

mine is the laser blue. I appreciate the offer and yes, thats a good deal for them, but I'm going to hold out for the Mazdaspeed wheels. I have a whole mazdaspeed theme going here. Thanks anyway.

No problem man...yeah if you can afford it, stick with the racing hart OE wheels. They look stock even though they never came on the car...Just throwingh the offer out if the price of the MSP wheels was not an option...

I've got some for sale, but it's only for the wheels. Pretty much everyone agrees that P5s can't run the stock MSP tires anyway.

how much for the wheels shipped to B'ham, AL 35114? And why can't you run the stock tires?? Seems to me the fenders are the same. What do I not know here??

i thought so also. I can't imagine them not fitting or causing fitment issues. The MSP is the same ride height as a regular sedan. I thought MP3 was lowered like .5", I'll have to look up the exact numbers though.

MSPs and MP3's are lowered about .8"s from the sedan I believe...P5's also have a sligtly wider rear track from what I remember, but the fender flares are the same size...So they can't handle quite as low of an offset as the sedan...The wheels I have are +48 mm offset front and rear with 215/40's...no fitment problems at all...

My MSP had stock ride height. When I took it into the dealer several times They parked that lousy stripped out Protege next to my car and they sat extremely similar. There may have been less than .5" difference, but the fenders looked dead even. I even commented on it, because I thought it was unusual. I still want those MSP wheels if someone has a set for sale. I prefer the 03.5's, but will take the 03's for a little less. ANYONE WANT MONEY???
