P5 sputtering and stalling at idle after oil change

:
Mazda 3 Skyactiv Hatchback
Got my oil changed yesterday. Now my check engine light is on and it sputters and stalls at idle. Took it back and they said they checked everything they did and it looked fine, cleared the code. Light came back on and it still sputters.

If you can go to autozone they will check the code for you and we will be able to help more. I would think bad mass airflow sensor or cracks in the rubber section of the air intake. Either way if you get the engine code we can help alot more.

Code 171 system lean bank one.

P0171 is "Fuel trim system too lean"

Possible causes:
  • Misfire
  • HO2S (front) deterioration
  • HO2S (front) heater malfunction
  • PRC solenoid valve malfunction
  • Pressure regulator malfunction
  • Fuel pump malfunction
  • Fuel filter clogged or restricted
  • Fuel leakage on fuel line from fuel delivery pipe and fuel pump
  • Fuel return hose clogged
  • Leakage from exhaust system
  • Purge solenoid valve malfunction
  • Purge solenoid hoses improper connection
  • Insufficient compression

Oddly enough, a vacuum leak isn't a possible cause. My next guess would be that one of your coilpacks is bad which is causing the "sputtering". However like MaxPower said, you should be seeing more codes (like the P030x misfire codes).

Was there any excess oil in your engine bay or in the intake. If they over fill your car with oil (very common) it can cause significant problems.

Have you had a look at your mass air flow sensor?

That's the only code they told me at the place that changed my oil. They told me I had a gasget leak and I had them fix that. But it didn't fix the sputter. My car was running fine before I had my oil changed :(
Have not checked the mass air flow yet.

Dirty mass airflow sensor or cracks in the rubber intake hose like I suggested earlier. Start there... I see this all the time with our cars.

Most of these issues would cause several codes. Bad fuel pressure regulator is the only one that even seems possible. Our cars do not have a fuel filter, just a screen on the fuel pump pickup. Bad oxygen sensors will have their own code. Insufficient compression would cause "fuel system too rich". And a vaccum leak is a posibility.

These are just generic trouble code definitions. Only a mechanicly inclined person can truly diagnose the problem you are having. But I am almost certain it has to do with the mass airflow sensor or unmetered air entering the intake causing a lean air fuel mixture.

Notice that neither of these were listed as possible causes and they are the most probable causes.

Thank you! Do you think this was just a coincidence that it happened after my oil change, or could they have done something? I don't know if I should take it back there or go to someone else.

+1 for cracked air hose. Jiffy lube tore a big hole in mine and caused my car to do the same thing. I change my own oil now lol

if they just did an oil change and nothing else and the oil level is correct then i would say its just coincidence that this is an issue. Like was stated first and foremost check the intake hose it probably has a tear in it, aside from that if you need any more help just shoot me a pm and i can look at it for you sometime just gotta come by the dealership i work at.

Now I need to track down a drivers side mirror. My roommate backed into it and broke it :(
Rough weekend for my car.
