P5 Shifter Feel

I noticed the Proteg's shifter is a lot stiffer than any other car. Shifting gears requires more effort and isn't as smooth. I kinda like it as it gives the car a "sporty" feel.

Can anyone explain this?

Thanks,
Matt

Maybe other cars you have driven have a cable-actuated shifter instead of rod-actuated? I was never a fan of any cable-driven shifters I've operated.

yeah, it does feel sportier... only thing i've found is that if i'm driving and not paying very close attention i'll try to shift it like i did my last car and i'll end up missing the gear and making this lovely grinding noise (it's like murder to my ears)... but then again maybe that's just me... and it could also have to do with the fact that the P5 has never been my primary driver until like now (or soon)

adding corksport bushings, kartboy bushings and a short shifter will make it a whole new feeling

Grinded yesterday into second when I wasn't paying attention. You really gotta put it in all the way.

I've done that a few times, always second.

I dont know about that sporty feeling everybody is talking about. Mine feels vague and long, I used to drive a Miata and the shifter is shorter and more precise so I guess maybe thats why. If you drive a Miata you will think your
P5 handles like a boat, atleast at first you will, then you get used to it and think it handles better.

I've never missed a gear. I've got the stock shifter and have never had problems. I've driven cars with so little movement in the shifter that you didn't know if you were in gear or not until you got back on the gas. Sweet car tho...

My last car was also a Miata, so I agree with Liquid's assessment of the P5 shifter. TWM bushings help, but leave it a bit notchy.

Any chance you have an aftermarket short-throw shifter in the car without realizing it? The stock shifter is low effort IMHO.

I have a TWM short-throw. It was very high effort and ultra-notchy at first, but has gotten much better with use.

Now the problem I'm having is that the heat shield is either scraping against the bottom of the lever or vibrating against the exhaust. Sounds like crap either way, and I can't seem to get it back to where it touches neither.

I was wondering that, too.

I like the way the p5 shifter feels, I drove my friends new honda civic when it first came out (2002) and I hated it so much. Never knew if it was in gear or not. I like fighting with my trans :)
