p5 is NOT a station wagon

Diane, I just noticed the vehicles in your fleet. Is that a 10AE with a rollbar?

I thought it was interesting because I have a 10AE (rollbar, hardtop--#4606) and just bought a silver 03.5 P5. Man, I love this P5. Not fast, just fun (to steal a line from Miata.net).
Yes sir..it most certainly is a 10AE--#1407 with the hard dog double diagonal. :D

You have good taste! But next year we are trading the P5 up for an RX-8. ooo...zoomZOOM!!

Main Entry: station wagon
Function: noun
Date: 1904
: an automobile that has a passenger compartment which extends to the back of the vehicle, that has no trunk, that has one or more rear seats which can be folded down to make space for light cargo, and that has a tailgate or liftgate

This is directly from merriam webster online...intepret it however you like, but it sure sounds like our PR5 are station wagons, even though I hate to admit it...

Main Entry: hatchback
Pronunciation: 'hach-"bak
Function: noun
Date: 1970
: an automobile the back of which consists of a hatch that opens upward; also : the back itself

Now we could call our PR5s hatchbacks too cause it is true...

Damn, you've all been...

Nice research Protege52nr. May I ask what was your resource?

No matter how you look at it, our cars are not the typical "station wagon"... Also, i just dont like it being referd to as a station wagon because it sounds so nasty.... not sporty at all... Hatchback sounds better

Pro Fiz is right, our PR5s are not the typical station wagon; much more sportier, fun to drive, and its just an added bonus to have a hatch instead of a trunk...it may be a station wagon, but Im stll calling it a hatchback cuz its still right and sounds cooler :D

it's a wagon just as the matrix is a wagon too

i don't get the fear and loathing some of you get when you consider that you could be driving a wagon...the wagon has been recreated nowadays and no longer a big, super slow, boxy, and only built for families...the wagon has transformed into a valid sports oriented platform for those of us who do not need a minivan or a rollover happy suv (though if a wagon gets close to being a minivan the matrix is in danger of such more so than the pr5)

Toe-May-Toe

It doesent really matter what you call it. The car is still a blast to drive.
It handles as good as my IROC-Z did, if not better.

MAZDA calls it a 5 door hatchback.

Protege 5

5 Door hatchback

Maybe the 5 is in the name of the car for a reason?

Mazda has been known to do that before. RX = Rotary Experimantal.

By the way, why do they refer to it as a 5th door? I never get in that way.

Actully it is not a wagon. Mazda calls it a hataback, my insurance says hatchback, and so does any website you go to(besides discount tires). The WRX wagon is a wagon the Protege5 is not. What is so hard about that?

i dont mind the wagon status. my insurance company and registration state "wagon"
no OTHER wagon can handle and look as good for that kind of money. soon this "wagon" will be boosted !!
;) :p

how come mazda calls the same car in japan the "s-wagon" then? anyway, there's no real point in arguing over this thing... there's too many of them in the past... just shut up and enjoy the car! (thumb)

By these definitions, which are old anyways, some wagons can be called hatchbacks and some hatchbacks can be called wagons.

I think they should change it to what I said earlier.

Wagon=same length or longer than the sedan
Hatchback=shorter than the sedan.

The Golf could be said (for arguement's sake) to be based on the Jetta. The Golf is a hatchback (3 or 5 door) and the Jetta wagon (longer than the Golf) is the same length if not longer than the Jetta.

when i think of a wagon i think of a car for a big family so to me a wagon is a family car , a hatchback is a cool looking sporty car that's for the younger crowd.
the protege looks too cool to be a wagon!

Hmm, not this again. OK, you know what, Car and Driver, Mazda, whomever was calling this killer looking car a "wagon" but now, if you look at the Mazda website, they're calling it a "hatchback" so the defiinition is changing. Whatever. It's one fun car!! zoom zoom zoom!!

Just please don't call it a minivan like my colleague's wife did...

I for one don't mind it being called a wagon. I love wagons. Just look at the Audi RS4 (Only comes in wagon "AVANT" trim) Volvo V70R, BMW M5 Touring (Wagon), Volvo 850 R Wagon. I just think that wagons or 5 door hatchbacks whatever you want to call them are awesome. Plus gotta love seeing somebodys face that has just gotten beat or been hung with when they are in a sports car (2door) and you are in a Wagon.
