I had my 4WD light come on the other day. It came on while I was sitting still in the car for 15 min with the engine running. It started blinking then solid. I turned the car off then restarted the car and it never came back. Took the car to the dealer today and I asked for the code and they said it was P1888. I can't find anything on that code. The dealer told me that they never seen that either and they have no idea what to do about it. They said they had to contact Mazda and they have them running a set of test to see what the fix is. Can some one shed some light on this?

Your dealer must sell Honduhs too. P1888 is a Honduh code for "Automatic Transmission Concerns". Mazda does not seem to use it at all. Ask you dealer to try again. My guess is the rear coupling/diff oil overheated from stagnant exhaust heat under the car...

Just got the car back from the dealer. Since they couldn't duplicate the problem (never actually had any, just the light), they pretty much let it go. They checked the harness in the diff. and replaced the fluids. Told me if the light comes back on again to bring the car straight in without turning the car oof to avoind the light going off again.

That's the best explanation I got.

I was told that all OBDII codes are pretty much the same. True?

There is a "standard" list of generic codes defined by the SAE and then each OEM has specific additional codes for their application. The OEMs don't use all the generics and obviously some OEMs reuse the same codes for their specific application. The "standard" list must remain identified as defined by SAE though. You can search the web (try www.metacrawler.com) for OBD codes, etc and go from there if you want lots of info.

Yeah, these are all automatic trans faults. The Speed6 has a manual trans and the code isn't listed in the Mazda FSM...
