Ordering a new CX-5?

:
2015 Mazda CX-5 GT
Does anyone have any experience with ordering a CX-5 from a dealer? I'd like to know about the process, prices negotiated, etc. I'll probably order a 2015, as the combination of color (Soul Red), GT wTech, AWD, and options are pretty scarce in So Cal.

Thanks

I see you're in San Diego, I bought my '13 back in Oct., 2012 from Paul Galindo at Bob Baker Mazda in Carlsbad. I drove 600 miles (actualy I flew down and drove home) from Northern Calif. to get the deal and the car I wanted. Now I'm not saying Paul and I are BFF, but he was a straight shooter as far as I could tell and the car was well-prepped for my arrival. He might be someone you want to check out (if he's still there). That said, special ordering is a very simple process and they may be able to assign a car that is already on the water so you may not have to wait the full 8 weeks or whatever it is these days. Price-wise, keep in mind that the dealer will incur no flooring charges for the vehicle you buy as it will be gone as soon as it hits the ground. So you should be able to negotiate as good a deal or better as you can get on floor stock. The only snag can be that you don't know for sure what incentives will be in place when your CX-5 arrives, but Mazda has been pretty consistent as of late, so you should be able to count on at least $500 owner loyalty money (you're driving a Mazda (well, a Ford-Mazda) product and low APR financing if your credit is decent. Good luck!

We ordered our 2015 on Feb 14th - romantic, huh. (wink) It is currently having accessories installed at the port and we expect delivery early next week. As paris1 mentioned, our dealer's fleet manager was able to intercept a vehicle already in the production stream which shaved a couple of weeks off the delivery time.

paris1, it's funny in that I almost flew up to Sacramento to buy a CX-5 Monday ;-) A dealer up there was offering $3500 off MSRP for an older 2014. However, several yelp reviews talked about them offering significant discounts, then find out that you didn't qualify for them when you showed up. I was a long time to walk home if that happened ;-)

Thanks guys, for the info. I've mentioned a few times to the internet guy about placing an order, but I think they try to push a bit to find something now rather than later. With the internet tools we all have access to nowadays, it's pretty easy to see that nothing is out there, that we haven't already tried to trade for.

The Tribute has been a really reliable car, I think I've only had to replace the shift cable and alternator, after 150K miles. The fun thing about owning a 'Ford-Mazda" is that I can blame all the stupid things (no light showing the ignition key slot) on Ford ;-)

Any others? I hope to go tonight and place an order.

Strange... I had set up an appointment at the dealer with the internet sales guy, and the sales manager to work out an order. Before I left to meet, the GM at the dealer told them both that nobody orders cars from the factory, they only get what they get! I think it is BS but I can't understand what the point is, other than directing me to a different dealer...

..unless Mazda is capacity bound on CX-5??

Bmarsh, ordering is fairly simply. The hard part is the wait of 45-60 days for arrival. I was originally going to order one but settled for a similarly equipped version at the dealer. I decided I could live without remote start and a trailer hitch for now.

Sent an email to all local dealers describing trim level, interior/exterior colour, options, accessories and requesting quotes by a specific date with a decision to buy to be announced three days later. All dealers would be informed of the winning location but no quoted price information would be revealed. Picked the lowest and went to that dealer to place the order. No mess. No fuss. The wining dealer ordered exactly what we wanted in the email at the price quoted and without attempting to force extras on us.

Best buying process I ever went through.

Sounds great! I still can't believe the response I got from the dealers here (San Diego). There are 5-6 Mazda dealers, all within easy driving distance, so you'd think there would be good competition. I did the exact same thing, sent them a list of must haves, and asked them to either find one or order one (I wasn't in a hurry, 60 days is two months less car insurance ;-). All of them looked around and gave me offers on the same car up in LA to trade. That was an older 2014. I pointed out two that were a little farther (San Luis Obispo and Bakersfield), but none of the dealers were willing to trade. None of the dealers were willing to work out an order without first visiting a dealer (probably for a hard sell, I had no problems going in to put a deposit AFTER we had agreed on the car and options).

So, I ended up contacting the two dealers, and made a deal with the guys in Bakersfield. I spent a total of about an hour in the dealership in Bakersfield.

The three hour drive home gave me a chance to get familiar with the new car :-)

Well done! My question is this: Did you drive home in the middle of the night that it only took you three hours from Bakersfield to San Diego?

Actually, drove home Sunday afternoon... I know the back way around (210 freeway to the 57) to get around most of the LA traffic, and it was nice and clear the whole way. A bit lucky, even the traffic in north county wasn't too bad. Averaged 31 according to the trip computer :-)

I was also pleased to see the nav system actually suggested that route, eventually...
