Around 6 weeks ago, the engine in my Axela SP23, developed a ticky clicky rattle while driving up a slight hill. By the time I'd pulled over and checked things weren't happy, the engine had ratted itself apart.
Later that day we found two broken spark plugs. One plug had completely lost its electrode, the other just the tip. Borescope confirmed damage to the bore, and cracked/missing valve seats, bent valves etc.
So that engine was a write off, and we sourced a second hand engine to replace it. When the second engine fired, it made (what sounded to me) like the same ticky noise. However the auto sparky, couldn't find anything sensor related wrong, nor could the foreman at the local mazda dealer. After deciding we'd have to get this replacement engine refurbished, the noise self resolved.(!)
So now i have no idea if that engine had been sitting for a long time and just needed to be run in, or if its still suffering from the same fault that killed the first engine. I just wish i could figure out that original fault... It was much loved - with full syn oil changes every 5k kms. Always warmed up...
To make matters worse this new engine now produces the most horrible farty raspberry noise from the intake. I can't understand why the intake note would change...
Cars suck.
