On Track to Purchase a CX5....then I saw a 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Maybe the new Jeep Cherokee will look better in person than pics shown so far...

The long list of TSBs are not spam posted by other manufactures. Referring to a earlier post.

The CX-5 does have issues, and did have rising oil levels, so lets not pretend that reliability is 100%.

If my car had the mirror shake that I saw on one of the four test cars, then it would have been rejected, so I believe these issues are genuine.

My car has no mirror shake, hood shake etc.

But my approved phone does fail to connect every time, and the live services work when they like, I've certainly gone backwards in the ICE department, and the USB plays the same record every time, I now hate Tina Turner's record.

So from my own experience I would say if ICE is important to you look elsewhere.

Personally I wouldn't consider a Cherokee.

I have had my CX-5 for 15 months now, and have had no issues, hood, mirrors shaking, nothing. We love it. My wife says that of all the cars we've had this is her favorite one to drive. One of my neighbors recently got a new Cherokee in black, and I like it's looks. Maybe the black mellows the lines, versus a metallic. It does look kind of sinister as someone mentioned.

Cheers

Packages may cost 2-3K more based on how you option but realibility may be better.
I currently have a Honda 2007 CRV and would hate to get a Lemon CX5 with the
1) Hood rattle
2) Mirror rattle
3) Rough idle

All new cars have issues though, making me think I should wait a bit...

If those three things make a car a lemon for you, just don't even consider the CX-5.
You won't have the idle issue, because that's apparently only "happening" to "one person", but the chances of having the hood shake a tiny bit at highway speed, which you have never seen happen in person as of yet, or having a mirror flutter at highway speed, again, which you haven't actually seen happen yet in person, are possible.

So, if a tiny amount of hood flutter or mirror flutter, that you may or may not ever actually see in person, makes you think a car is a lemon, just delete your user account, and go buy something else.
We won't have a problem with you choosing something else, really.

But most of us here think the CX-5 is the best choice in the market right now, and we enjoy our cars very much.
And the Soul Red CX-5 is a fantastic looking car. I enjoy seeing mine every single day.

BC.

you mad bro?

why should i delete my account if i'm here to learn from everyones opinions?
There is currently a post right now such as

"Thinking of buying a 2014 Mazda but scared of bad comments"
http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/show...CX-5-Grand-Touring-but-scared-of-bad-comments

There are other post about multiple users who have issue in terms of quality after weeks or months of use. Some will have issues, some will not. I simply saw the Jeep and got intrigued as it may be viable option and put this post out there for your thoughts…

You're correct, I still think the CX 5 is the best choice on the market, just don't want to get "that" cx5 with the problems that some people have, wouldn't you?

so simmer down and lets be constructive

I'm pretty sure this guy is here just to stir things up.

You have evidence? you said you're pretty sure!
You must have a case...................................
What am I guilty of? is inquiry a forum crime officer?

lol

Thanks for everyones constructive comments........
The jeep isn't no where near being in show rooms yet, in the mean time
I will be scheduling a test drive for the CX5 (smile)

I'm one of two or three people on the planet who kinda likes the styling of the new Cherokee. But even so, the deal killer for me is its relatively limited cargo space.

Actually, it doesn't look too bad. I think it's like most cars (to me), color combination, wheel choice/color can make or break the whole look of the car.

I can't get past the front end styling. It's hideous. From the sides and rear, it looks okay. But that face, well, it's something only a mother can love.....a blind mother.

Are you looking for a real SUV or a high riding car base AWD like the CX-5?
4Runner, Grand Cherokee, MB and some of the Chevy products are true SUV's with low range.

In terms of crossovers, if not the CX-5, there are a couple of used options you may want to consider...
X3, X1
Several Nissan products like the Pathfinder, Murano
Highlander
Honda Pilot

We had an '11 X3 with the 6 cylinder twin turbo engine. Great power, handled reasonably well, gas mileage was in the low 20's. I hear the X1 is nice. You can get a low mileage X1 for less than $35K and that comes either with turbo 4 or 6 cylinders.

As this sounds weird, we're really liking the CX-5. Since we bought the CX-5 about 2 weeks ago, our '11 Cayenne GTS has been sitting in the garage for about 2 weeks. :'( We're getting about 28mpg vs 14mpg for the GTS. :-) We also have a '11 328Xi touring wagon and the CX-5 surprisingly handles as well. However the 328 has much better overall power (non turbo 6 cylinder). The 328 gets about 22mpg in combine hwy/city driving.

I just love how a shaking hood and mirror and an intense idle at start up makes for a troublesome automobile.

Get real. Spend some more time on auto web forums, come back here and you'll see the CX-5 has been smooth sailing for Mazda.

I do see your point, but unattractive styling masked by color combos and nice wheels can only do so much.

A vehicle with good design and styling will only look better with or without the nice color combo/wheels.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I like BMW's a lot but I dont feel like buying an used car. Other than for warranty matters, being a foreigner (I'm moving to US from Italy) I'm afraid I might be easily cheated.
It's going to be just me and my wife so some of the cars you listed are too big for us, and I also prefer a 'real' automatic to a CVT.
Basically even a hatchback might be enough (Mazda 3, '14 Kia Forte 5 SX, Fiesta ST, ...), but I'd like to get a CUV/SUV (I never had one) for safety matter (AWD) and for the extra space.
The reasonable prices in US and the fuel cost at $4 per gallon in US vs. $9 per gallon here (it reached close to $10 some weeks ago), are an incentive too.
Just as example, a fully loaded CX-5 Exceed (about the same as GT trim) 2.0L 160hp (we dont have the 2.5L) AWD is $49k here, the same trim with 2.2L Diesel 175hp reaches $52.5k
I browsed all makers website from Acura to Volvo (ok, I missed Yugo) and, unless some new model is coming out soon, I restricted my choice to Sportage SX, CX-5 GT and now the Cherokee 3.2 Limited. I was considering also the Escape 2.0L turbo but for the price of the Titanium trim, I can get the Cherokee I like more.
I know the CX-5 is the wiser choice also thanks to this forum where I learnt a lot about it, but still the Cherokee would make me feel more pampered and all the experts reviews are talking good about it, now I'm waiting for the customers reviews
Maybe in the end just a test drive of them all and the best deal will help me to choose.

Dude, wanting a jeep because of suspect reliability on a Mazda is like straight out of opposite land...

I have never owned a Chrysler in fairness, however I have had enough friends with Cherokees and rams......not good if reliability is your concern.

Get a SUV for extra space, but don't get AWD for safety. The most dangerous thing about AWD is the extra false sense of security. AWD is NOT safer than FWD. It is just practical, in the sense that you are less likely to get stuck in a snow bank or on a steep icy hill. But you are just as likely to skid in a ditch or rearend someone on icy roads, and even more so if you think you are safer...

Fyi, the Cherokee was supposed to be introduced in July, but has been delayed due to transmission issues. What's interesting though....it's going to be a ZF 9speed transmission.

The Cherokee's chassis is based on the Dodge Dart and also share the 2.4L 4cyl, so looking at the Dart's reliability history can give some insight to the reliability to the Cherokee.

The optional 3.2L V6 penstar engine is based off of the 3.6L V6 Penstar. The 3.6L is used in the 2011+ Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Caravan, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Chrysler 300, Chrysler 200, Dodge Durango, and Dodge Caravan/town and country. So the reliability of the 3.6L in those cars can also give some insight to how reliable the new 3.2L Penstar will be.

Yeah, my fault i used the wrong word, of course physic laws always win.
Let's say I already have a FWD and a RWD car so I'd like to try an AWD.

...

I know that issue, it affects the 2.4L.
"Specifically, the vehicle, when equipped with the 2.4-liter Tigershark engine has trouble engaging 8th and 9th speed properly, sources tell us."
http://jalopnik.com/jeep-had-to-delay-2014-cherokee-because-of-9-speed-tran-1031461191
By the recent reviews it should be fixed now. I'm not interested in the 2.4L anyway.

Actually there is only one thing I dont like about the CX-5, even if it is a common issue among different vehicles of different brands.
I might pass over the sound system and its flaws, but I cant stand the idea that if I want a safety optional like the SCBS (the only thing I really care about of the Tech pack) I'm forced to get the navigation system, somemore a crappy one.
I miss the good old times when car's optionals were not packed. It would be more expensive to get them all, but it also might save someone's money to get only what he really wants/needs.
Anyway, other than that (I repeat, not a specific fault of the CX-5 itself), I'm sure the CX-5 is a great vehicle.

My 'perfect' CX-5 would be a manual transmission with lots of the higher end options (as well as AWD) so I definitely see where you're coming from, but the 'options as packages' business model is here to stay (at least with non-luxury vehicles) because it saves the manufacturers a ton amount of money. Dealer-installed options are the only things that are "optional" anymore.
