Okay. I'm asking how many of you drive automatics, and have no intentions to change?

My 1st 2 cars were automagic, but then I got the MSP & I was driving by myself after only 30 minutes of practice (I had tried to learn a few years earlier, probably 2 hours total spent trying). There is no reason that anyone can complain about manual...there is less stuff to break, you get better gas mileage, it's more fun, it's faster, & you can engine brake.

I used to live in Orlando & I've sat in traffic before, it's not that bad. If you want something to actually complain about, try waiting in the line to get to NOPI.

I kinda wish that I had gotten a stick. But, if I did I would have had to get a used P5, so I opted for the brand new car with the triptonic auto. Hopefully I can do a tranny swap in a few years.

Not to trash anyone's choice but.....yes, Pirana had a badass car. However, he was the first to admit that his tranny sucked and that he had to get a car w/ a manual tranny to do what he wanted w/ it.

However, manuals do suck in regular rush hour traffic. Fortunately I don't currently experience that.

this isnt a sports car. its a ******* econo box. and i live in california where any mods u do can get your car impounded for 30 days. -=\
if i thought i had a chance in hell of going turbo i would have bought a stick.. if the car wasnt so ******* slow when i test drove it.. i would have bought a stick..
besides.. all the fast cars im around ARE stick.. i just dont drive them.. i drive my slow ass wagon automatic and enjoy it -=P

right now i believe i will forever drive an atx... but i don't own a protege.. i have a 6... altho i don't think i could ever go back to the standard atx... i love my tiptronic!

i could drive a mtx if i HAVE to but i really kinda suck at it... i get into first kinda slow because i'm scared of stalling.. but once i get going i'm good.. altho sometimes i forget to take my foot off the gas all the way so it'll sound like i'm revving in between shifts (i kind got myself into trouble once with that) and what's worse is it's a bit uncomfortable because i have to move the seat up to the first position and sit at the edge to get the clutch in all the way... and then i have to recline the seat more because i can't stand sitting that close to the steering wheel...

so just keep in mind... not all revs mean let's race :p

If you didn't like it when you test drove it, why did you buy it?

No offense Matt, but seriously.......you live in OK!! Try stop and go in LA, or NYC, or like me in the tourist capital of the World!!

Yes, I drive the sportronic. Every car I have owned previously was a manual. I still own a '97 Avenger in Manual. And yes, overall I prefer a manual. But reality check is this, HOW you drive your car should determine what tranny you need.

No offense to this thread, but it's an instant slam on all non-manuals out there. Who would WANT to vote so they can get slammed? Seriously, one of the best modded cars on this forum was Pirana, and yet I don't read s*** about his Auto, b/c he had a badass car, regardless of the tranny.

Sorry to get so......defensive.......but it seems there is just as much nagging and (poke) on this forum about Man/Auto as there is about MSP/P5's.

My 2 cents down the drain......

-z

his main reason for getting rid of the Pirana Mobile was cause it was an auto and the tranny couldnt handle the power the hiboost was putting out. his STi though is a 6spd.

Well it was'nt my choice to get an auto so to make a long story short I got screwed but I'am currently working on getting my auto P5 traded in for a stick msp or a stick mazda 3. I'll admit that I hate my auto it limits me to turbo the car which I really wanted to do and just driving it in general it's not cool.

I drive an auto and I want to change to a stick desprately!!

Who cares as long as it's fun to drive. And honestly, I'd take any of several automatics (like a corvette or 5 series bmw) over my manual MSP any day.

i have found that personally speaking, I am much more focused on driving when in a manual car. When I drive my automatic I tend to spend more time fiddling with the radio and holding conversations than when I drive my manual. Could also be my auto is an SUV and not fun to drive at all.

Stick all the way, even when I lived in CA i loved my stick truck and wouldn't trade it for an auto.... also I've been driving stick for 10, almost 11 years (started when i was 10)...

My last 4 cars were stick, and the most recent was stolen. So when I searched for a new car, my fiance wanted an auto. So I bought an 02 P5 auto.
However, every day on the way to work or back, she notices I always reach for that stick that's just not there....(cryhard)

I have a stick. I learned how to drive on an auto Mercury Sable, was taught stick on a Jeep Cherokee, drove my sister's manual VW Fox for a while, went back to the Sable. Always loved the stick. The Jeep wasn't as much fun to drive, and the 4 speed Fox wasn't the best car, but I always felt that it was just so much more fun to drive the stick.

I realize that some cars are just so great that you wouldn't care if you had to drive auto and would trade your current stick car for it (like Tx speed demon mentioned). But that is not the question. The question is, would you get manual or auto if you had the choice?

I've always liked manuals for:
-fun to drive (shifting, rev-matching, heel-toeing, burning out, engine braking)
-keeps me more aware of my driving
-cheaper when you buy (by $1K usually)
-simpler design, easier to understand, so therefore...
-cheaper to maintain or replace
-better gas mileage
-better control over performance
-and just feeling like you are an active/important part of the performance of the car - you just don't slam on the gas and go, you work with the car

I've not liked manuals for:
-Stop and go days, especially on uphills
-imperfect trannies that annoy sometimes (1st and 2nd shift sound familiar?)
-lower resale price (although it depends on car)
-you have to be aware of how well you use it ALL THE TIME or else you might see problems real fast - if you don't care about how you drive a stick shift you might break a fork, burn up a clutch, wear out a throwout bearing faster, detonate your tranny, or ruin your synchros, just to name a few
-sometimes you just don't feel like shifting - you know, some days your car just feels like it's in the zone, other days not

Oh! And; I'm not interested in hearing sorry ass excuses about traffic, or the hilly streets of San Francisco. You bought Proteges (at least; I think you did), because you are DRIVERS!! You want to take control. By God! You will choose the gears, when you want to choose the gears! You want to feel in control!

You look at driving as fun, a sport (I don't care if you race or not).

I will add; this does not really apply to Mercedes Benz SLs, Larger MBs, or larger BMWs or other larger sedans, that only offer Tiptronic type Autosticks.
This whole poll sucks and makes you look like an ahole because you talk down to everyone who wants something other than a manual.

I drive a automatic, and I do know how to drive a manual.

But I sit in traffic every day, so a manual would just be frustrating to me due to stop-and-go traffic.

I often use my Overdrive-off button to keep a little engine breaking, and instant action when I need it.

I would say that I would like a manumatic, sports auto, or what ever you want to call it.
So me it seems the best of both worlds.

Run in automatic when you are stuck in traffic, but still have manual control when needed, without having to screw with a clutch.

And by the way AGR I have driven sticks since 1979, I have also drivenhuge army and utility trucks where you have to double clutch and you have a high and low gearing. I bet I could drive a manual car better than you if I was half asleep and on cold meds. I own a "sportronic" type of tranny right now, does that make me "less of a driver"?

For a Sucking thread, you sure are active on it!!!!! Ha! It's a FUN Thread, CJ. Take a Pill, for Christ's sakes! (lol)

FLORIDA???? hahah

U people in OK and FL have no idea what traffic is. I live 20 minutes from LA and it takes me 4 hours to get there on a weekday between 6-9am and 4-7pm. ITS A JOKE...the 5 and the 405 are two of the worst freeways in the WORLD!!! the 5 goes from being 5 lanes down to 2 bout 10 minutes outside of LA...tell me about traffic. NO PITY at all...i still drive manual tho because i have balls. If you drive a car that has any type of potential in an AUTO then you are a fool. Learn how to drive a stick. its your only excuse for not having one. YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE STICK!!!! (band2)
