Oiling the CAI?

So I got my CAI in today, some questions about oiling it.

The parts guy said to lightly spritz it while it's on the car with the solution that came with it, While the bottle it came with says to take it off and fully submerse it in the stuff.

Which do I do? And how often?

we are talking about the mazdaspeed intake for the speed3 right? is'nt it a dry flow filter? and is'nt that solution cleaning solution?

that is a good question because i never saw anything about how often. cleaning every tire rotation would be conveniant, but might be too often.

The Mazdaspeed CAI has a dry filter. It should be cleaned every 20,000 miles. It should have come with two bottles of cleaner; you use both bottles in one cleaning. Look on the AEM web site for instructions.

Cool, Exactly What I was looking for.
So how often should it be replaced?

Like every 35k?

In theory it should never need to be replaced unless it is damaged.

I'll probably get a spare though because I'm anal that way. The cleaning requres it to dry for an hour or more; with a spare you can just exchange the filter and then clean the dirty one for the next time.

I wouldnt suggest it. If debris and other foreign materials get into your engine...it could cause alot of damage.

Thats what I was thinking, But It's definitely possible in an emergency situation is what i was really asking, chances are slim but I'd hate to have my car incapacitated for a couple hours and an emergency happen and have to split.

Great post about our CAIs since I too have the bottles in my basement, and had no idea how often I was supposed to clean it.

By saying: Looking on the AEM, are you saying that they made it for MS?

I can't speak for him but i assumed he meant that they are very similar and to treat them the same.

If it's anything like the k&n cleaning kit you spray it down with water then spray the one that says cleaning solution on it, then wait for like 15 mins. and let it soak. Then you wash that off let it dry then oil it, let it dry a little longer and put it back on the car.

Great....I didn't get any cleaners with mine from Mazda. I guess I can go back and ask for them. (Or just find something similar online.) I was told that you have to be really careful about over-oiling them though. I guess when I pull the old one out, I will get a good idea on how much should go on.

I repeat - NO OIL on the MazdaSpeed CAI filter.

You shold have gotten two bottles of cleaner. The filter should be cleaned every 20K miles. Fill a bucket with water to a height about 1" less than the height of the filter & pour in all of one bottle of cleaner. Dunk the filter in with the opening up and slosh up and down, being careful not to get any of the wash water in the opening. It will flow inside through the filter, but you want no particles to get inside from the dirty water 'cause they will get sucked into your motor. After you do this for a few minutes, drain the filter, dump out the dirty water, and do the whole thing again with fresh water and the other bottle of cleaner. Again, be sure none of the "outside" wash water slops inside of the filter. Then let it dry for an hour or two and re-install. NO OIL!

If you didn't get cleaning fluid you can get it from the AEM website. They made the filter (and probably also the entire CAI).
