hey all,

so, i want to start of by saying i did try and search...but gave up quickly.

now, what kind of oil are you all running? the reason i ask is because i just did an oil change on my baby, and it was a little more km than i wanted to do it at, 10,000km and well...i got some sludge. im using the royal purple 5w-30, im wondering if i actually did it around 6k would i have this issue, or should i switch oils.. last thing i need is a warped head and new motor lol

it been recomended for me to buy some cheap oil...run the s*** of it, get it real hot...drain...repeat 2 more time in one day..then put good stuff in.

opinons?

I use royal purple 10w-30 and haven't had a problem. I change mine every 3k miles. I wish I could help but have never had that happen so I don't know.

This product is an additive to your normal OCI. I've used it for going on 3 years with some noticable results on my higher mileage cars. No 'miracle' cures but an improvement of overall engine performance. Here's a link to the site with FAQs etc.

BTW, I've always used regular dino (5w-30w) in my vehicles...

If the sludge is light, you could also just run some Mobil1 or Penzoil platinum in it for a 3000 mile OCI. If it's heavy, AUTO-RX may be needed.

definatley a light sludge, coated the bottom of the oil container, guess ill jus giver it a change around 5-6 km and see if its still there... if it is ill give a new oil a go, or even the auto rx stuff

I've used Mobil1 5w-30 since day 1 and changed every 3-5K miles. 80K miles later, no problems whatsoever.

Summer time I used 10W30 Mobil 1 Synthetic. Winter time I use 5W30 Mobil 1 Synthetic. They recommend 5W30 for temperatures below -20C....seeing that you live 150 kms west from where I live, I expect your car to see the same lovely winter conditions my MSP sees. Change your oil every 5000 km, you engine will always run smooth. You got sludge because you waited too long to change it, after 5000 km oil starts degrading.

Royal Purple every 3k miles is some pretty expensive overkill.

Why does everyone use 5W-10? I've been using Mobil 1 10W-30. Should I change?

Where have you heard of 5W-10? Do what your manual says, which is 5W-30 or 10W-30.

Follow the manual for oil changes - mine says every 5k miles, so I really doubt the 5000 kms. Especially for synthetic oil - changing it every 3,000 miles is pointless. You're just throwing money down the drain. Of course oil makers are going to tell you 3000 miles - they want you to buy more oil! Stick with 5000 miles (~8000 kms), and you're good.

i personally think that if you race your MSP often than 3K miles is not an over kill at all, but if you do regular driving and maybe race 2 a month than 5k miles is allright. And i do royal purple as well (10w 30)) ever since i got my two msps and not a problem. I always have used R.P on all my cars. And change the oil every 3500 miles and spark plugs every 7k miles.

Well, the Canada manual says oil changes every 5000 km. Although synthetic performs better than regular oil, I follow the recommended cycle to be on the safe side.

Mobil1 5w30 every 4-5k miles since the day I picked up the car new. I'm at 100k miles now without any problems.
I only recently started switching to Mobil1 10w30 in the summer.

In December, I used Pennzoil full synthetic for one oil change becuase the store was out of Mobil1. Almost immediately, my MSP started throwing CELs for a bad EGR, failed ignition coils, and O2 sensor. I know it's most likely completely unrelated, but it spooked the crap out of me. I immediately switched back to Mobil1.

As said above the scheule really depe ds on how you drive it. The mazda schedule is most likely based on a minimal boost regimen. In fact it's probably based on the regular protege with a relabel. Turbos are very harsh on oil. I don't know if any of you have seen turbo oil but of looks more more like cqppachino than oil. If you boost alot rolling a stricter schedule may not be overkill. Don't forget that oil is coating a shaft that at times is spinning at 120,000 rpms. It really takes a beating synthetic or not. I'm not saying you have to change it religiously at 3 k but the owners manual doesn't account for spirited driving :)

...the owners manual doesn't account for spirited driving :)

Boy, is THAT an understatement. Mazda didn't account for spirited driving, LOL.

"The Mazdaspeed Protege has a race-worthy suspension that enables it to outhandle the competition!!"

"But don't race or compete, or we'll void your warranty."

(notcool)

5w30 during the Summer for me. And 10w30 during the winter.

EDIT: Im not goign to change this post cause of posts after this, but I had it backwards LOL (damn work getting me lazy for rereading what i wrote)
