the oil temp seems to have gone mad.
its a 98 mx5 1.6 or for u.s. it would be 99- 1.6
the temp gauge quickley rises to halfway and them stays there even if you leave it sitting of 30 min or so. can work it out because it seems to be working but not 100% .any ideas ....

thanks

ok so chrimbo is comming and i might have the time
so where do i go and what am i looking for ?
i ant no turkey with a hammer so can i do it myself ?
and how long should it take ?

wait, is your gauge broken or is your oil--i'm so confused.

[EDIT] if your gauge is broken, i'd just replace it with a jackson racing oil temp. gauge. if you oil is actually not cooling down, i'd suggest the link above. either way i believe that the cooling system is somewhat of a must have if you have a high performance car, imo. [/EDIT]

ok.

when you are driving does your temp gauge rise abnormally high?
maybe better: when did you get the gauge? how was it reading before this happened?
i'm guessing your oil is the issue here. but then again i could be wrong.
ALSO. i just realized that you probably don't have a actual gauge that i am referring to..heh. it's early, give the chick a break. :/

ok so its sounds now like its more likley to be the thermostat and i have been given one from a customer but it has a different face and i dont know the temp ranges for the mazda guage or the new one . think it might be eayser to bring it in and just get the garage to check it out. am putting new carbon kevlar pads on tommorow and will have a look then before i bring it in to anyone.

thanks for the help Kristin

oil temp? or oil pressure? If you're talking about that gauge in the middle, that's pressure. Starting in 95 Mazda did not put a real gauge in the MX5. It is really an on-off gauge for oil pressure. It doesn't move after startup unless you lose oil pressure.

Just curious, because your symptom sounds like you're looking at that gauge... If that is what you're looking at, it's normal.

might be right. its the guage in the centre above and between the revs and spedo, me thinks a quick looksee at the manaul might be in order. will do tonight and get back on in the morning.

thank you both

The gauge in the center between the tach and speedo is an oil pressure gauge, not temp. It's normal for it to rise to, in your case, "H" when the engine is cold, then it should go a tad above L when the engine is warm and at idle, and during normal driving it should be about half way.

95 and up doesn't move. it goes up, and stays put until oil pressure goes to zero.

my thoughts on this are that your mx-5 is actually a universe imploder in disguise (boom07)
