Oil pressure gauge on the MS3?

I want to install a oil pressure gauge on my ms3 but to my knowledge it isn't as easy as most other cars. I usually use a sandwich adapter tapped onto the oil filter.. however if i recall right our cars use the drop in filter not a traditional screw type. If that doesn't work I would add a tee onto the stock sender. Does this seem possible? I haven't looked at it much

I haven't looked at my MS3 enought know where to put the sending unit for OP yet, but i do suggest that you invest in a nice Electric oil pressure gauge. the style with a sending unit. mechanicals can use either nylon tube or copper lines but copper can break easy from fatigue of movement, and nylon can melt. just my 2 cents

IMO a tee off the oil sending unit in the car will work with no ill effect even better would be a tee off the turbo feed line.

I also am interested in an answer on this. I have the gauges installed on my MS6 and get find a sending unit connection for my Oil Pressure gauge. It looks good I just wish it would work LOL

I was told it was not a good Idea to tap into the line coming off the turbo feed by a performance shop just FYI because I was going to.

The sensor is on near the oil filter but I havent looked if there is enough room for a tee there. I want oil pressure and temp. Any extra plugs in oil gally or such? Any easy places to tap water temp also? I would not mess with the turbo feed lines as they are a b**** to get to anyway and if it lost pressure or causes a loss to the turbo it could be big repair bills.. here is a mazda 6 with the 2.3. Our filter is the same so it should be simular.

From the looks of the pics in the conversion we would need to remove the filter mount to be able to get a T-piece onto the filter mount

If converting to the screw type filter couldn't a sandwich plate adapter be used? Has anyone contemplated doing the conversion to their cars?

{EDIT - confirmed that we do use a cartridge type filter}

It could possible restrict the flow of oil as it's designed for a 2.0 liter non turbo motor. Might be ok. The NA 2.3 seem to be ok. I dont really trust it, if you motor breaks they might kill you warrenty. I thinks tee'ing the factory sensor or finding a plug with pressure somewhere is the safest bet. If it easy enough to do. I have done a lot of searching and cannot find anything of any 2.3 mazda motor concerning where they put an aftermarket gauge sensor. They seem to just tee of the factory or use the sandwhich plate on most other cars..

Apparently we also have a oil cooler assembly sitting on top of the oil filter which i think makes this an unsuitable conversion. Oil cooler can be seen on the last pic here:

So that really leaves two "simple" options, T off where the factory oil pressure sender attaches to the oil filter mount (temp and/or pressure) or a sump plug with temp sender.

Whom ever your performance shop is , they are FULL OF SH!!T.
90% of the turbo cars out there have the oil feedline coming from the motor at the closest point to the oil pump. You want your sending unit right there so as soon as the pump FAILS you will know it and save the motor. at top Rpm it doesn't take but a few second of no oil pressure to Seriously screw things up.

My other turbo car has the sending unit and the oil feed line on the same block adapter.

What kind of adapters and sizes will I need? my gauge is in the mail. Oil pressure that is. Is the stock 1/4"NPt?. I pretty sure the sensor will be 1/8' npt. Will a tee be good enough or should I run a line from the factory location to maybe near the frame and mount the stock and aftermarket there. I know theres not much room there but I havent really looked cause of the plastic splash sheilds. If I did use a remote type of mounting on the sensors from the factory location would what kind of hose would be needed. Fuel line? Are the fitting barbed or do they screw on. I want something which will outlast the car and not have to worry about leaking or vibrating loose.

Adapters will depend on where you put the feed line.
I do recomend that you keep the oil flowing in a straight line and t off the feed line for OIL p.

Also make sure that line isn't near HEAT and DO not use copper lines. motor moves to much it will break and cause i beuatifull mess

I am thinking teeing off the factory oil pressure sender near the oil filter. Unless I find a better idea. I have looked a lot on mz3 and mz6 forums and cannot find any more info on other locations to tap. I gonna check the turbo oil suppy lines also. but they may be to diffcult to access.

U'll be ok w/ Nylon, ran the same line for over 2 years in my turbo ZX2 never had a leak

i do agree nylon lines are good, but depending on how close you are to heat the nylon could fatigue and crack. I run a nylon line on my SVO but its no where near heat. i still heat sheild the line just incase.

I had an oil p gaguge in my MSP and I did an electrical unit. I used 2 copper adapters and both failed. I then went with a SS unit that was mint. No leaks. I went here: http://www.mcmaster.com/ to get the SS adapter.

Check other MAzda3 forums and 6 forums. There are how-to's on the 6 forums and the MS3 guys are doing it now too.

Using T fittings and adapter.

Just one advice is that whatever T line you run from, don't run with nylon line as they can come loose after a while due to the rather high pressure on the oil line. Go get some braided line made up to prevent unforeseen mess you may end up with the nylon line.

Nylon for what? Don't do a mechanical (sp) oil P gauge. Electronic is much safer.
