Only if the filter media is also better. You can put on as big a filter as you want, but if it's media is only ****** foam or something, you're not gaining anything. K&N is bigger (about as big as you can fit in there) and the media is the world's best.

There's a mechanic I trust in the Mid-Atlantic area that says a bigger-than-stock oil filter can be bad for the engine. If the filter sits empty or partially empty while the engine is off, then it is going to take more time to fill and pressurize by the oil pump at startup. This robs the valvetrain from oil during the critical first second or two of operation. This time adds up over hundreds of starts and could wear some parts of the engine well beyond their actual milage.

All this seems logical to me, but I have never really heard any other direct evidence to support his claims. Of course, if a larger filter was that much better, why wouldn't manufactures spec them as OEM? I mean, filters are CHEAP protection for engines...

According to Red Line (in new issue of Import Tuner, part 2 of a series on oil), any major filter brand is about the same these days- they're all doing a great job of filtering. And for people that change their oil every 3000 miles they could even just change the filter every other time. Although personally, because every filter has a bypass valve, I would keep changing it with each oil change. Very good article, but I suppose most everyone here already uses a synthetic.

The 626 V6 oil filter is ~ 20% larger in volume than OEM. Since all quality filters have anti-drainback valves, using a filter larger in volume will not cause oil starvation on start-up. Obviously, Mazda is not going to equip their cars with inadequate filters so there's no question that the OEM filter is completely adequate if recommended oil change intervals are followed.

A larger filter MIGHT be useful if synthetic oil and extended oil change intervals are used but even this might be doubtful. For example, Mobil claims its new Extended Performance Mobil 1 oil (good for 15,000 miles between oil changes) does NOT require special oil filters or that the oil filter be replaced before the 15,000 mile oil change.

If you do use a larger than OEM sized filter, make sure that the relief valve setting is the same as OEM, ~ 14-18 PSI.

For what it's worth, I use Red Line synthetic oil and the Mazda 626 V6 filter.

I just toss on an OEM sized filter, usually Purilator (spelling?) if I can, sometimes I go witih a FRAM (Double or Tough guard, the base model blows ass) or wal-mart SuperTech if I can't find a one of the Purilators where I'm at...

FRAM IS THE WORST FILTER YOU CAN BUY! Any of them, not just that basic one. I've seen numerous tests where Fram came in DEAD last out of 15-20 filters in filtration, flow rate, etc. Do no buy Fram! You're only asking for trouble if you do.

I always have used mobil 1 filters and oil, but I'm going to buy a k&n next time and see how I like that. Maxx Mazda, where do you get yours? I've only seen them for sale on thie internet.

They're hard to come by. You need the HP-1004 K&N (I just buy like 5 at a time so it saves me the trouble, but they ain't cheap!)

I get mine at Part Source or Canadian Tire. I don't know many other places that carry them. If you can get a K&N air filter, they're supposed to sell the oil filters too.

I have a 626 V-6 Mobile 1 filter on my P5

the Mobile 1 filter for the 2.0 is a M-108

the Mobile 1 filter for the 626 V-6 is a M-110
