Volkswagen's high-performance plans for the new Golf will spawn three new models, beginning with the new 210 hp GTI set to debut in Paris and go on sale in the middle of 2009. According to Automotive News, the Mk. VI GTI will sprint to 60 in a tick above seven seconds and hit a top speed of around 150 mph.

A performance-oriented diesel Golf, dubbed the GTD, will hit the market in April, putting out around 170 hp from its common-rail diesel, while a range-topping R model, available through Volkswagen Individual, will be churn out 270 hp, send power to all four wheels and will be equipped with an aero package that includes a "black gleaming diffuser." Sales of the R version will begin in November of 2009.

"Performance-oriented diesel" sounds funny together...

Doesn't the current GTI get to sixty in less than 7 seconds?

2009 VW Golf GTI Drops Ahead Of Paris

Like the 2009 VW Golf VI, the 2009 VW Golf GTI is a lot like the old car, just a little bit better. Power comes courtesy of the same EA888 2.0-litre turbo used in the Edition 30 MK V, making 207 HP and 206 Lb-Ft. Looks-wise VW wanted to make the new GTI looks lower and meaner than the MKV. Thank the wide lower air dam for that. Of course, the question in everyones mind is: how fast is it?

Following the leaked images from earlier today, VW has released 16 fresh images and first details of the GTI Concept which debuts next week in Paris. Building on what was previous stated, the GTI Concept receives Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC). The ACC aids the already stiffened sport suspension with electronically controlled pneumatic dampeners which have three ride level settings ranging from comfort to normal and sport. Depending on the ACC setting and driving conditions, the ACC system also remaps the steering and throttle response for enhanced body control. Also, the new GTI concept features for the first time an electronic limited slip differential (XDS) which is linked to ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme).

The GTI concept is powered by the 2.0-litre four cylinder TSI engine currently seen in the Scirocco producing 210 PS (207hp) 10 PS more than the Mk V GTI. Despite the increase in power the new engine is still more efficient with 37.6 mpg (combined cycle) while emitting 178 g/km of CO2 compared to 189 g/km for the Mk V GTI. 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes 7.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 148 mph making it the fastest standard production GTI yet.

Finished in typical GTI interior traits, it receives a flat-bottomed lack leather steering wheel finished with red stitching and the sports seats sport the traditional grey tartan cloth reminiscent of the Mk I and Mk V models.

The Golf GTI starts production in spring 2009.

sounds very technologicly advanced but i can't believe that 0-60 sprint time not sure if its the gearing or what but a stock mazda3 does 7.5 or something...

GTI's are long loved cars. I do like the looks just not the service records. The interiors have that rarety though that I appreciate. Nice cars but I will keep my speed.

I thought there were leaks of the new GTI getting a huge torque boost (211 horsepower andd 258lb-ft of torque). Someone lied to us! =)
I don't understand why they can't push more HP. A 7 hp gain over the last gen is pointless.
Maybe next generation, they'll push an unheard of +8 hp.

I'm sure there will be a 4 door model.
Awesome! The only problem is I'd have a really hard time not modifying one if I got it. One thing is for sure though, those wheels would have to go. I keep telling myself the next car I buy will already be fast and therefore not require extensive modification to meet my goals/needs. I'm sick of suffering through driveability losses.

I really like the styling. I see a bit of the new Sciroco in it. I understand why plaid for the seats, but I'd have to go with black leather.

VW is going to make the most of its new GTI, with three models joining what has already been a well received hot hatch. A 'GTD' variant using a 2.0-liter common rail diesel will go into production in April 2009, with 170 horses and nearly 260 lb.-ft. moving through either a six-speed manual or VW's DSG gearbox. The GTD will be sold at an €800 premium over its gasoline brother, and will get to 62 mph about a second slower in return for longer hauls between refills.

After that, toward the end of 2009, comes the GTI 'Plus' that will push the car dangerously close to the Audi S3 and may spell the end of the current R32. A 60 hp bump over the standard GTI takes the Plus up to 270. The fun-to-drive factor should be raised with a seven-speed DSG transmission, and handling mastery will come courtesy of a Haldex all-wheel-drive system.

The capstone: to help everyone get over the current and rather underwhelming R32, the hottest hotness is supposed to come in 2010 in the form of an R42. Swapping the current V6 for a 2.5-liter, turbocharged 5-cylinder that it will share with Audi's TT-RS and RS3, the raunchy R is rumored to get a chest-hair-growing 350 hp. If Auto Motor und Sport are to be believed, it will start rolling out of factories in November of 2009 at an undisclosed price.

Boo, this had me all excited until I read the bold part. Also, although no doubt it will be unreasonably expensive the R model sounds kind of neat although I suppose it's unlikely it'll make it stateside. It'll probably have the same stupid DSG transmission as well... I don't care if it can shift faster than I can - I like rowing through gears! This DSG stuff has been a major turno off for me with Audi and VW lately.

Famous last words ....i said the same thing about my wrx...then got showed up by a few guys around where i live and went with a simple stage 1 reflash....then that wasn't enough...stage2 is now here and still I NEED MO POWA! The prob with my car is more power = expensive broken parts (moon)wrxstocktrans...but i put together a simple yet long list of mods that will take me about 5 years to do. It should be fun!
