Official 1/4 mile time

I drove down to the 1/4 drag strip in Gainesville(FL)on Saturday and got 4 runs in. My best time was a 16.7. I borrowed my friends (OpusX)camcorder and tripod and mounted it in the back seat. I will try to post the video of the run when I have time and can get it figured out. I have a stock MP3 and hae never drag raced before. How does this compare to times anyone else has gotten?

well.....i got 16.7 in my P5 :D, but i've been told that i'm lying. If that was your first time out, i'm sure you'll be able to knock that down a little.

Kudos to you LooseCannon that has to be the funniest signature ive seen! My MP3 looks like that right now....damn city all they do is salt salt salt salt.....you bastards!

MP3TLH, what was your reaction time? thats the thing that all people miss in trying to get a better 1/4 time. their is soooooo many factors in doing a 1/4 mile. i believe you LooseCannon. sounds a-boot right.

Reaction time has no impact on the ET. The timer does not actually start until you trip the lights. I think on his 16.7 run, his 60' time was around 2.4 secs.

Thanks for posting my runs OpusX. That first one waws the worst of the day for me and the second clip was my best.

i dunno what kinda track yall were at or maybe they were set up diff. but yes reaction time is extremely important. at all the tracks ive been to the timer starts as soon as the light turns green, thats the whole purpose of a tree. maybe they set it up different for you, idunno. btw, a perfect reaction time is .4-.5 second but thats awsome. also you have to acount for wheel spin and clutcdh slip and where you shifted in the rpm curve. also weather has a large factor. some cars do better in cold and some do better in hot. cold weather is good b/c (s***, i forgot exactly why but ill post it later when i think of it) and hot air is good because air is dryer. best conditions are a warm motor, hot dry day and throw a bag of ice on your intake. this is gettin pretty serious about it but on high performance cars it helps out a lot so it might help a little on our puddle-skippers.

I went to the NHRA website and verified this: The reaction time has nothing to do with elapsed time.

Since dragsters were competing at the same time to get offical NHRA time I am POSITIVE that I had an elapsed time of 16.7 seconds, with a sorry reaction time of 1.6 (I think).

Here is the NHRA site: http://www.nhra.com/basics/basics.html

I got beat by a modded Golf in the first clip and an old school Monte Carlo in the second clip.

My best time was 16.4 last summer with my ES/GT.

One of my friend make 16.05 with is Protege5.

With pratice, I can be around 15.9.

Just wondering, when you shifted. What exactly am I hearing? Is the the infamous clunking people talk about or something? It didn't sound like the way my car sounds when I shift, even if I'm shifting really fast or really slow..I've never heard that kind of noise..

RT does not get added to the ET at all. The only time that it may come into play is if you're bracket racing.

Perfect RT for the Sportsman tree (3 yellows in sequence before the green) is .5 secs while a .4 is perfect on a Pro Tree (3 yellows simultaneous and then green)

I can't think of a reason why a car would run a better time in hot weather than in cold. Cold air will usually be better because cold air is more dense which in turn helps the car make more HP.

That's not the infamous clunk that you hear. Even though I have that also. I think one leg of the tripod was bumping the center console. It usually doesn't sound like that when I shift.
As for the radar detector it is an old Cobra from around 1997. It still works and saved me when I was going to the drag strip.

I ran a 16.56 at 83 with my MP3 last November. It was a pretty cold day.

BTW: to get the best time if your car is stock...don't shift out of 3rd gear b/c you'll hit the end of the strip by the time you hit fuel cutoff
