OEM Engine Block

Hey guys, just have a quick question. Wondering if a new OEM block can still be purchased from Mazda? I can't have any downtime with the car to rebuild my motor so would rather start with a fresh block to start my journey down the forged path. Thanks in advance.

I don't see a reason why not. But then again, I'm sure a call to Speedcircuit or Corksport would yield the same results.

Agreed, just rip. One out of a regular protege/p5, save urself some $$$ and rebuild from there or just order a built block straight from speedcircuit.com

ya dont waste ur money. Call around see if a junkyard has a used one. Mazda will guaranteed **** you on the price.

Thanks for all the responses. I didn't get a chance to call Mazda today to see if and how much. Was looking at the speed circuit site last night and it definitely seems like a viable option however wanted a bit of a project to take on over the winter months to build from scratch. Although in the end I might just go the speed ciruit route. I'll also give a few wreckers a call. There's got to be a ton of P5's kicking around.

Now above there was something mentioned about a "long block".....is there a different motor in these cars? Short block?

A "Long block" is a term used as an already assembled engine, crank, rods pistons, head, cams... almost complete

a "Short block" means just the bottom end alone, block crank rods and pistons... no head

thanks for all the info guys. ok, I did call a local Mazda parts dept along with one in the Seattle area. In case anyone else is wondering I figured i'd share the info I got.

Vancouver: Block alone $5300 "Long Block" just over $10,000!!!

Seattle: Block alone $1648/$1685 I didn't ask about other options. He couldn't tell me the difference between the two available blocks but said i'd need to figure out a part number for him to tell me which block is right.

additionaly I asked about the Factory Service Manuals:

Vancouver: $199 + $85 for the electrical

Seattle: $300....couldn't tell me if it included electrical or not.

I'll call around to a few wreckers to see if I can find a low mileage P5 and see how much to go that route......however, does anyone have the part # handy of the right block so I can confirm with the Seattle parts dept. Thanks again!

It is incomplete..and requires to be updated...

The new motor used ARP studs vs the OEM. They torque differently.

Ask me what you want to know. in the future

i work at a mazda dealership and i priced a block... all i can say is if your getting a NEW oem block (wow)u have deep pockets... REAL DEEP my price is 10% over cost and a BARE BLOCK is still wicked expensive. get one from a junk yard and have it haned/checked.. much cheaper, just as reliable.
