O/D on shift knob

I am thinking of changing out my stock automatic shift knob. But the O/D buttton is located there. Would it be ok if left disconnected or should I locate it somewhere else?

Im not too sure, but i would imagine that if you disconnect it, you would just always have it on..... since its on by default... best to call mazda or ask one of the more inclined people on this site.

ZiO is right on the money...the overdrive would remain on if you disconnected the switch. My friend and I switched the gear selecter in his car with a drilled-out 8 ball (you'd just push down to shift). My old car had a Miller Lite Beer Tap for a shifter on the 3 speed...modifying that was a b****....anyways, buy the gear shift knob that you LIKE, then see if you can run the wires to an inconspicuous spot elsewhere inside and hook up a new switch. Hell, you disguise it as a NOS trigger or something equally ludicrous.

Miller beer tap!!??? Thats awsome!!!
HA HA HA!
You guys are freakin hilarious with ideas......

:D :D :D

By they way... where did you see a different shifter... what website.. I live in Canaduh and there are not many performance stores where i can go to in Edmonton.

Thanks bud

Is it hard to replace an O/D shift knob?

How hard is it to replace a P5 O/D shift knob?
anyone have any step by step stuff with like pic hopefully? haha
I heard that is quite hard to replace...so...any comment?

there are no such shift knob that exact fit our car ...
and that is the problem ..
i think ...
and i am thinking is that going to be OK to disconnect the O/D system ...
and the problem is i need it!!!

I have disconnected the O/D just to see and it does stay on. Im in the process of finding a shift knob. No luck yet but when I do I will let everyone know. I just wanted to get some opinions before I did it and if there was a replacement anyone knew of. So thanks to those who replied.

O.K. no pics of this mod yet, but I will. I just installed the MOMO auto shift knob. In order to remove the factory shifter, first disconnect the O/D wires in the console. Remove them from the holder and you will be able to remove the shift knob. Next run two wires to a spot you might have selected and wire them to a momentary switch. I choosed the dead pedal. You might want to do it on the console itself.

Will post pics step by step later.

Im actually doing this same exact thing except i dont know what to look for when buying a shift knob (i have an auto too). Are they universal or do i need to look for one that will just fit a 02 protege. Or does it need to be specific to the P5. Also, about the type of switch, can i use a toggle switch instead of a momentary switch? i have one for the interior neons and want them to match. Also, last question(bear with me), i picked up a toggle switch from radio shack and im not sure if it will work for the O/D.

Its a basic on/off toggle switch and it says "DPDT contacts rated 6A at 125VAC"

will this work?

the problem is not so much which automatic shift knob to use but the stock piece under it that it sits on. you must find a match with that, replace it, or cover it up.

True. As for the toggle switch, you have to use a momentary switch. That is the way the shift know switch works, and you just want to duplicate its connection. You can find a toggle switch that looks the same way as the one you have, but in momentary.
